Charlotte Bird’s show jumping column
Nottinghamshire-based, 12-year- old show jumper, Charlotte, tells us about her recent exploits with her fabulous 13-hand pony, Woody Two Shoes, also 12 years old.
Woody and I had an amazing weekend! On Saturday the 3rd of December we went to Vale View for Trailblazers Jumping. It was great to be competing again!
We got to Vale View and Mum and I went to walk the course. We thought about the distances and what I would have to do to get them right and to get my lines straight into the fences. The course was challenging and a good height.
Woody’s first prize
The weekend before, my Mum received a phone call from Ruth Tyler (BS (formerly BSJA) Development Officer) saying that I had been nominated for the NAF Shining Star Award for November! This award is for good behaviour, improvement, attitude and enthusiasm towards sessions. I was absolutely over-the- moon. I cannot wait to hear who has won!
o The academy sessions are really working for Woody and me. I would recommend it for all riders under 21 years as a way to access higher level show jumping tuition. If you would like to attend an Academy Session you should contact Ruth Tyler (East Midlands Development Officer) at
ruth.tyler@britishshowjumping.co.uk or ring 07584706461.
Woody jumped excellent and went clear and into the jump-off which was raised up to 85cm. The jump-off required some very tricky and accurate turns, luckily we had been practising earlier in the week at home! We came out with a double clear in a time of 32 seconds . There was some very hot competition!
I heard 35, 35 and 37 seconds being called out. Which meant… Woody was the fastest!
It was great to win a 75cm Trailblazers, it was such good fun and we had a great day! This means that we have now double qualified for the 65cm and 75cm second rounds which should be held next spring. This is something to look forward to next year.
Charlotte on Woody
On the 4th of December it was Kirkby Riding Club’s annual trophy and rosette presentation! I was very excited. Everybody had an amazing night, the rosettes and trophies were beautiful. Woody and I took home two trophies and rosettes. Second in Working Hunter and third in Handy pony. I was very proud of him. This season has been amazing and Woody has been so good for me. We’ve progressed so much. Thank you to Kirkby RC for an amazing, well run night and a big well done to everyone who competed this season!
Next year I am hoping to do well at the Trailblazers second rounds and qualify for the finals at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. The next step will be BS Affiliation. Woody and I are already registered with Club BSJA, which is a great stepping stone, but to join BSJA properly will be very exciting! I am hoping to register in time for Pony Of The Year 2012, which would be a dream come true.
Thank you for reading. More news next time!
