Thrills Thrills & Spills Photos by Nico Morgan

Every year we put together a feature on riding accident prevention, safety and body protection but accidents still happen and people still get hurt. Even the very best riders fall off and there is no shame in it. Don’t let others ridicule you for wearing body protectors and using other safety aids. Riding hats, body armour, tack, mobile phones, satellite tracking and all the other areas of health and safety have improved greatly over the years. Trends have, thankfully, changed and it is now far more fashionable and acceptable to be sensible and protect yourself! Governing bodies are insisting on competitors wearing the latest standard in hats and body protectors. Showground insurance policies make it the rule at many events. Traffic and road manners appear to be getting worse, so it is a good idea to wear hi viz clothing on you and your horse. Road surfaces and hard ground are very unforgiving should you land on either, so an up-to-date hat and body protector make good sense even for hacking.

Gravity and danger are no respect- ers of beauty, age or ability. Some- times it is smarter to wear a good body protector than just to think you look smart without one! It has been fashionable for dressage riders not to wear a hat, especially whilst schooling at home or warming up, but this is beginning to look as stupid as it may turn out to be. Will it take one of our top riders to smash their heads against the boards to persuade riders it just isn’t cool? The manufacturers produce such fantas- tic gear now, if you haven’t updated your thinking or hat/body protector lately, may we suggest you do?

Make it a New Year resolution – take care and wear some protection from head to toe.
