Sounds Familiar Sounds Familiar the show group run by Philip Ashley received a certificate of
appreciation recently from The Friends of the Children of Emaus. Presented by Carol Saunders, the certificate is in recognition of the continued support given to the association by Sounds Familiar. Sounds Familiar’s first performance in February 2009 was for The Friends of the Children of Emaus, and since then they have carried out at least one show a year plus other concerts to help raise money for this worthwhile charity.
The group itself has grown from the original seventeen members to the current size of thirty five, giving greater scope in the types of music that can be tackled. Sounds Familiar is just one of the ventures that ‘Philip Ashley Presents’ promotes with any show or concert giving a minimum of 25% of the tickets sales to charity, along with programme and raffle sales when these happen. Last year alone Emaus received over 3,000€ and in total 6,210€ has been raised and given to local charities in 2011.

On 19th December the Vice President and Secretary of the U3A Dénia delivered toys and games which had been donated by the membership to
the children’s care home in Dénia. Every child received a bag full of presents and a shoebox full of gifts donated by the ladies in the Needlework group. The Christmas tree at the home was decorated with baubles hand knitted by one of the ladies in the needlework group. In January many volunteers from U3A Dénia will be commencing on their project to decorate some of the rooms at the care home.
Kindest Cut At the December meeting of the Costa Blanca Gardening Circle, 40 members watched
Mike Wyatt show them how to prune trees and shrubs. He stressed the importance of choosing the right time to do this and cutting with the correct equipment. Using a large branch, he demonstrated how the most untrained tree can be restored to a good healthy shape. After a lively discussion and many questions he judged the 2 competitions, one being a Christmas table decoration using natural plants. This month’s meeting will be on 11th January. Details from the secretary: telephone 966 498 681.

Ciudad Patricia Christmas Fair Success. Over 1000 people visited the wonderful Christmas Fair with 54 individual stalls, held
at the special senior retirement resort. All visitors enjoyed their free mulled wine sitting in the sunshine, on the terraces overlooking the valleys to the mountains. There were many stalls ranging from cheeses, unusual Christmas gifts to Belgian Chocolates and much more. The Festive atmosphere was helped along by Father Christmas and live music. Susan Read, a resident at Ciudad Patricia, signed copies of her own book Lollipops of Dust. In all it was a lovely day out, and visitors were able to see one of the show apartments.
Some of the residents who has been living on the resort for
24 years thanked everyone and Nadine the location manager for organising a very special happy day. Ciudad Patricia Senior Resort regularly holds events so please call Amanda to find out more information 673 064 288.
The Tartan Army Children’s Charity for Emaus. The Tartan Army Children’s Charity have once again come to the aid of the Emaus children by
collaborating with the “Bags For Christmas” appeal. A donation of £500 was sent over from Scotland after a fundraising party held by the TACC. The money paid for a small mountain of babies milk, nappies and other essentials for the Emaus baby unit which looks after 14 children under 3 years old. “This amazing and wonderful gift gives us such peace of mind and will last us a whole month” said one of the Emaus carers. The Scotland fans previously donated £15000 towards an all-purpose sports field for Emaus. If you like to donate any of the items in this picture to continue this wonderful legacy, please e-mail
info@thebedcentre.com or call 965 836 814.
