How To Tell A Good Dentist Part 2
In the December issue the importance of the first complete examination, pain free dentistry, early diagnosis of gum disease and a CAD/ CAM laboratory were outlined as the first four important clues as to how to tell a good dentist.
In this second half are the six final pointers out of ten that will help you discover if you are receiving the best treatment available. 5) CAT SCAN. In the 21st century implants have become the first choice of treatment to replace a missing tooth. If an implant is required, these days a digital Cat Scan is mandatory. We have the best technology at our finger tips, why not use it? A Cat Scan will avoid the dentist clipping a nerve and leaving you paralysed with a droopy lip. The extra 100 odd euros is worth that! 6) COMPUTERISED TECHNOLOGY. A dentist with state of the art equipment (in all fields!) tends to be able to provide more precise and sophisticated treatment and diagnose problems that otherwise would go unnoticed. 7) POST GRADUATE EDUCATION AND DIPLOMAS. A dentist qualifies between the ages of 23 and 25, but no law, as such, forces that dentist to continue studying and as we all know advances in medicine are made every day. A dedicated practitioner will carry out courses and study for masters to be able to ensure that he is providing the most up to date techniques that his patient deserves. 8) INFORMED CONSENT. For complicated treatments we should be sure to have understood all the implications and pit falls as well as the consequences of having a treatment carried out and our dentist has a duty to explain all these to us.
9) BEHIND THE SCENES. Cross infection control and nurse training is not a problem in the UK because of strict legislation. However, here in Spain, it is a very serious problem as it is not taken seriously. There are no checks on practices on their sterilising techniques or the qualifications of their staff (especially girls off the street acting as hygienists) which can lead to serious consequences. Unfortunately since it is the side that patients do not see, it is the area where dentists can save on expenses to provide cheaper treatments. Remember Hepatitis B and C and HIV are all invisible. How much is your life really worth? 10) BEWARE OF FRANCHISES who unfortunately, in some instances, do not have your best interests at heart and exploit young inexperienced dentists, fresh out of dental school to earn the business as much money as possible with the cheapest materials on the market. The majority of these franchises are being sued for malpractice but as we are well aware Spanish law courts are not known for their speedy results!
Last but not least, you should have complete
confidence in your dentist; it is a relationship which should be built up so that going to see your practitioner is no more stressful than going to the hairdresser. Your dentist should be prepared to find the time to listen to you and to understand you as an individual as well as to carry out his or her treatment with the utmost perfection.
At Clinica Dental Zen we follow all the above criteria in order to provide the patient with what we believe to be the highest quality dentistry in the modern world. See contact details in our advert above.
