N&C Nicobond Supports ISO
N
&C Nicobond have joined forces with The Tile Association, as well as other industry leading organ-
isations, to pledge support for the main- taining of technical standards and facilitating transparency within the tile industry through sponsoring the International Standards Organisation (ISO) Committee Plenary Meeting to be hosted here in the UK. As manufacturers, N&C Nicobond
fully value what ISO represents to the tile industry. David Forbes, chief executive officer said: “Since inventing ready mix tile adhesive in 1958, N&C Nicobond has been at the forefront of developing tiling solutions, which have enabled tiling applications in situations previously not thought possible. N&C recognise that the consumer and tile fixer need to be protected from those companies that do not promote best practice or quality. The ISO Standards Organisation is the best way the tile industry can protect itself from less scrupulous companies by creating measurable qualities all companies should expect to achieve.” Initially the meeting was due to take
place in Japan, but after the disastrous tsunami struck the nation, Japan was forced to withdraw their support to host the meeting. The UK Tile Association stepped in with the support of N&C Nicobond and other industry members to ensure the vital meeting to discuss new and maintaining existing standards affecting the international tile industry went ahead.

Capita Symonds unveils plans for Saudi Arabian mixed-use scheme
P
lans for a new £20 million, 50,000 sq ft, mixed-use devel- opment on the east coast of
Saudi Arabia have been unveiled. Designed by Capita Symonds on
behalf of a private client, the develop- ment comprises six floors of circa 8,000 sq ft open plan office space, retail units on the ground floor, and a new gymnasium and spa facility. The design features a triple skinned
facade with chevrons of stainless steel set apart as a grid by a thousand individually LED-lit faceted acrylic crystals - each held in place by a plated gold finial, which act as low angle and high angle solar control and refer back to the traditional ‘Mashrabiya’ of Islamic and Middle Eastern architecture. The roof is formed as a carefully
balanced wing with tapering edges to all sides and has a gold leaf soffit to reflect light and activity on the ‘executive’ top floor, which in turn features a carefully designed prayer space as well as boardrooms and private offices. Chris Boyce of Capita Symonds
said: “The project explores the way a façade can alter the internal envi- ronment by providing shade, and at the same time can deliver very dif- ferent visual impact at differing times of the day and night. The crys- tals on the façade and gold leaf underside to the roof are a nod to the client’s connections to the pre- cious stones and gold trade.” Work is expected to start on site in
spring with the project due for com- pletion in 2013.
