Levolux puts Reading students in the shade Students at the University of Reading’s Department of Film, Theatre and Television are benefitting from the new £11 million ‘Minghella’ building, which features an impressive Timber Fin Solar Shading solution from Levolux. The ‘L’-shaped building sensitively balances the need for naturally lit communal and circulation areas, to encourage social interaction, with the need for critical acoustic separations between the various teaching and performance spaces. The solar shading solution from Levolux comprises
Timber Fins, arranged into vertical and horizontal panels, fixed at first and second floor levels, respectively. Each Timber Fin has a rectangular profile and measures 200mm wide and 50mm thick. In total, Levolux engineered and installed 24 panels of Timber Fins, formed from Lunawood treated timber.

Living roof to inspire city children A living roof to encourage biodiversity is a key feature of the new environmental Isis Education Centre at The LookOut, Hyde Park in London. Working with Dr Nigel Reeve, head of ecology at the Royal Parks, Cityroofs installed the roof membrane over the gently curving timber plywood substrate, then covered it with crushed brick and soil forming a ‘brown roof’ to maximise colonisation by local flora and fauna. The choice of a brown roof was motivated by
the aspiration to blend the building with the landscape, make it a habitat for inver- tebrates and birds, and help to preserve and potentially enhance the biodiversity of the Park. Self-seeded plants are now already well-established on the roof.
