Bexley Road a fatality waiting to happen

I wrote to the Council when the congestion was really dangerous, even after new yellow lines there is still high danger for the school children crossing where all the cars are parked, so I will continue to make my fears known to the Council and I hope other residents will do also. After all it is illegal to park in designated cycle lanes.

Sadly, Evelyn we cannot. SEnine has raised this issue over and over including feature stories. The council seem to be ignoring the problem or at least dragging their feet.

There is little doubt that some one is going to die as a direct result of this parking madness. When this happens, as it is very likely that it will, offi cers and councillors responsible for, at fi rst creating the problem, and then taking so long to resolve what should be a simple matter, should be charged with gross negligence or more.

This is a matter more important to residents and safety than Green credits, Olympic posturing and political manoeuvring. It is time we had a council that will put aside politics, think of residents fi rst and direct those involve to fi x these type of issues.

Crossing Safety

I have contacted The Ministry of Transport and they have confi rmed to me that it is illegal to park in a designated cycle lane. The cycle lines in Bexley road are considered ‘designated cycle lanes’ because they have cycles painted in them. This is the explanation I have been given by the Ministry of Transport. They have told me that anyone parking in these cycle lanes are liable to a fi ne.

As you know this is an ongoing problem and has been reported by many people, myself included. The double yellow lines put in the areas where there are traffi c islands has just resulted in the cars being parked on both sides of the road, up the hill and in the areas between the painted double yellow lines.

With the school now on the Bexley Road this is resulting in considerable danger to the pupils and it won't be long before there is a serious, if not fatal accident.

Can you please tell me why these cars are allowed to park in an area which is deemed illegal by the Ministry of Transport and why the Greenwich council continues to ignore this issue?.

I am writing to SEnine to ask if anything can be done to make the crossings safer at Well Hall roundabout. We moved here 5 years ago and everyday my

wife and I and my

2 boy's use the crossings .We noticed that drivers come around the roundabout either too fast or do not realise there is a crossing and have trouble stopping. On numerous occasions I have witnessed people nearly get knocked down. I myself and my wife have nearly been knocked down on this dangerous crossing. I hope you maybe able to publish my letter as I feel it will only be matter of time before there is a major accident.

Howard, this crossing does seem to be in a very unsafe place and perhaps should be moved. Unfortunately, many will still cross there. Hopefully a councillor may read this and might react to your appeal. Please be safe when crossing at that point by waiting for cars to fully stop.

Eltham Library

I’m afraid I can’t agree with Barry Spencer (October Issue) regarding Eltham library.

The library certainly hasn’t lost its personal touch. We are lucky to have very helpful and knowledgeable staff and there is certainly no compulsion to use the computerised checkout system. The old desk is still there where you can take your book to whichever librarian is on duty.

If you don’t have a computer at home, you can use one at the library completely free of charge. Wonderful! Or, if like me, you have a computer but no printer, you can use the library’s printer for only 5p per copy; not to mention the photocopier at only 5p per copy too.

It is certainly noisier than it ever used to be but that’s because so many more young people use the facilities which are now available and I fi nd that there is much more of a community atmosphere in the library now which is surely a good thing.

If I have one complaint it is that the High Street entrance is closed on Sundays.

Some of us have become so decrepit that we can’t make the long haul along Archery Road - but even that is acceptable now that the library is open seven days a week.

I just avoid Sundays! Marion Langham
