SEnine
A giant Henry VIII will lead the procession, looking down over the plebs of Eltham in a way not seen since his hunting escapades through the royal woodland which existed between Eltham and Greenwich in the 16th century.
This will be followed by a procession of architectural lanterns inspired by some of the important heritage sites of Greenwich, all accompanied by
Yuletide merriment of sounds and lights.
Over the coming weeks, children across the area will be preparing for the Greenwich Council sponsored event by assembling their lanterns and learning about the rich history of SE9.
This year’s theme will be to celebrate the long and varied history of Eltham, including the Palace, Pleasaunce and generations of Royals who graced the borough.
The parade also fi res the starting gun on celebrations of the borough’s Royal incorporation in 2012.
Twelve schools have
been
chosen to produce lanterns and take part in the parade, but children from any other school can take part by joining a community workshop being held at St Mary’s Community Centre on Saturday November 12 between 11-2pm.

Eltham Palace was the boyhood home of Henry VIII, where he took lessons from his future Lord Chancellor, Thomas More, father of Margaret More, whose husband William Roper owned Well Hall and was responsible for building the Tudor Barn, now so beautifully restored by its current lessees.
It will be from Eltham Palace’s architecture and artefacts that the children will create their lanterns this year
