PERSONAL ELTHAM Performing is My Passion

Yana Burova, 32, is a classical violinist from Bulgaria who lives in Eltham, with her husband

Richie. How old were you when you started playing the violin? Five. I was born and brought up in

Varna, the sea capital of Bulgaria. My mother and older brother are both violinists so the music talent runs in my family.

What brought you to England? While I was at music school, Professor Yfrah Neaman used to come from England to take a summer master class. One had to audition to attend and he would select around 20-30 students. Then he would choose one person to go to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London studying with him on a full scholarship. That was me.

Were you ready to leave home in Bulgaria? Not really, I had not expected that to happen so I was very surprised and not prepared. I worried that I would miss my family and friends but it turned out to be a good move. That was in 1998 when I was 19. I studied at the Guildhall for four years.

Did you fi nd inspiration from any of the teachers in London? Yes, when I moved to the Trinity

College of Music in Greenwich, I had a very good teacher called Vasko Vassilev, also born in Bulgaria. He's a leader of Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and an outstanding violinist.

While at Trinity I won the J&B Beare Classical Concerto Competition over two consecutive years, attended master classes with great teachers such as Yfrah Neaman, Mincho Minchev, Georgy Pauk and Maxim Vengerov.

What did you do after fi nishing college? I started teaching and am now at Emanuel School in Battersea.

Do you perform in concerts? Yes, performing is my biggest passion.

I have performed all over England including at Leighton House Museum, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St James's Piccadilly and St Paul's. I have also participated in a number of festivals in Bulgaria and Europe.

Have you done any recorded music? Recently I released a CD featuring

music for violin and piano written by 20th century Bulgarian composers. In June this year my quartet Inspirity released a premiere CD of Richard Rodney Bennett's Clarinet Quintet with Classical Recordings.
