Manhattan or Bust

A

group of local youngsters is going to be ‘spreading the gospel’ over

the pond next year.

The Crown Woods College Gospel Choir is heading for the home of soul singing which will see them performing in heart of Manhattan.

The choir, now installed in state-of-the- art music centre facilities atop the new £50m College site, has been building to a crescendo over the last few years and appearing at assemblies, shows and concerts to gain experience of performance.

The trip to New York is pencilled in for February half term. The group is fund- raising and looking for sponsors for the trip, which will take in some of the heights of gospel singing. And they’re keen to sing for groups and organisations around Eltham before they go to help raise some money for their trip.

Hannah Powell, director of performing arts at the College said: “The choir is currently in its third year together and their progression over this time has been fantastic. “The trip is a great reward for all their hard work over that time and they will learn so much just from being in New York and seeing some of the famous venues”, she said.

While in New York, the group will be singing at the famous St Paul’s Church, which stands yards from Ground Zero and miraculously remained intact during the collapse of the World Trade Centre towers in 2001. The church has been the scene of many of the post-disaster commemorative events.

“It’s an honour to be asked to perform in such an iconic location”, said Hannah,

who will lead the trip. Also travelling will be Sarah Westergaard, head of drama and Hannah Spencer, music teacher. As well as singing at school events over the past three years, they have assisted in projects with local primary schools and singing at community events such as ‘Eltham Lights Up’.

The choir has also been lucky enough to collaborate with the Tech Music School in Chiswick, where members had pr ofessional vocal coaching, stage direction and joined with the Tech Music School Gospel Choir in rehearsals. The choir’s

vocal

coach, Laura June Barnes, also leads classes at TMS.

Hannah said: “We are currently trying to

fundraise

so that all our pupils can come on the trip, as not all of them can aff ord to pay. We are looking for sponsorship or donations from any local businesses in our area.”

The choir’s repertoire takes in music from the gospel genre to pop music and will be performing at Crown
