Was it all a Midsummer Night’s Dream? November
The cast have been rehearsing since July and are creating a very upbeat version of a Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is a multi-layered and interwoven tale of love. There are the crossed relationships of the young Athenians - Hermia (Sarah Pinel) is in love with Lysander (Will Hawkes) who is originally in love with Hermia but accidentally tricked into falling in love with Helena (Steffi Ferrie), who is in love with Demetrius (Conor Hayes) who is also tricked into loving Helena. Hermia’s father Egeus (David Fisher) has ordered Hermia to marry Demetrius. This youthful love
In the Realm of Fairyland, Oberon, King of the Fairies, (Stephen Clark) and Titania, his Queen (Sophie Tergeist) are estranged and Oberon orders his Jester Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow (Nicole Tribe) to help him punish and shame Titania with a love potion. Oberon also wants Demetrius tricked for his cruelty to Helena. Puck with his schoolboy enthusiasm goes a little overboard with his pranks and this is how Lysander and Bottom are tampered with. Puck also has the best costume, but you’ll have to see for yourself. In the end

To celebrate the Duke’s wedding, the Mechanicals, an acting troupe, are putting on ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’, which is about forbidden love and should be sad, but due to their poor acting ability is comedic. Peter Quince is the carpenter who leads the troupe (Dave Jordan). Nick Bottom, the weaver, plays Pyramus and is turned into a donkey by Puck and is the shaming love interest of Titania, (Andy Noakes). Francis Flute, the bellows mender, plays Thisbe, the heroine (Stuart Pinel). Robin Starveling the tailor, plays moonshine (Sandra Vamplew), Tom Snout the tinker, plays the Wall (Susan Owen) and Snug the joiner, plays the Lion (Rab Cowan).
The cast is completed by Philistrate, Master of the Revels for Theseus (William Burtt) and the fairy servants (Annie Gibbons, Connie Shaw, Bryony Rogers, Laura Lawrence, Debbie Norton).
The musical director John Howells, the choreographer Alicia Thompson and the cast have created a beautiful Madrigal using Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore.
