Every little bit… The opening of the mini Tesco’s at Well Hall has proved profi table for the nearby Pleasaunce, SPY learns. As a reward for offi cially opening the store, the Friends’ chair Sue King accepted £500 towards developments in the park. Judging by the number of shoppers, the new store is being well received, despite the building site conditions next door at the Coronet. But customers parking on the completely redundant strip of tarmac between Tudor Parade and Well Hall Road should beware. Despite not being labelled as such and of no use to pedestrians, who all use the proper pavement, this strip is ‘ticket territory’, a £100 fi ne being levied for each off ence.
A SPY correspondent learnt
this fi rst hand. Apparently, it’s offi cially categorised as a ‘verge’ and, as such, is a prohibited parking zone. Not a little bit of help on a shopping trip.
Golden ticket? Perhaps an unlucky parker here will be subject to the country’s fi rst £1,000 parking ticket next year? With an Olympic venue only just over the hill at Woolwich, the stretch might come under the council’s draconian proposals for
increased fi nes during next year’s Games. In
order to keep to roads clear of blockages for the thousands of cars heading towards the small-bore clay pigeon shoot in Woolwich, perhaps Well Hall Road will
become one of the designated areas. SPY suggests special parking tickets could be designed in the shape of a medal? Bronze ones for parking on a single yellow, silver for a double yellow and gold for a pelican crossing? They may be worth something one day.
Quite a mouthful.. With the Yak and Yeti making good use of the old Greyhound pub, SPY receives news that yet more dereliction might be taken from the High Street in the

name of cuisine. Local lad Tan Ozsoykal, formerly of Deansfi eld and Crown Woods, and a member of a well know Eltham family restaurant business, is looking to convert the shop on the corner of Passey Place and the High Street, formerly JuJu’s clothing shop and more recently a pop-up pawnbroker’s, into a café/restaurant. Promising something diff erent and an exciting new dining experience for Eltham, the cafe/restaurant will aim to provide the best of Mediterranean food. Watch this space as the plans head towards the planning process. With the new Prezzo coming our way, and more coff ee shops opening by the day, Eltham’s becoming a gastro-capital?
2011 Centre of culture… SPY’s cultural correspondent had a hectic three days mid-month. Starting with a humorous and sharply performed Ayckbourn performance by the Priory Players, then next day to a poignant and atmospheric Anne Frank at New Eltham by the Community Players, and ending with the varied and celebratory SEnine 5th annual variety concert.
Star in the making SPY cultural correspondent has nothing but praise for the performance of fourteen year old Pamela Tickell as Anne Frank. Her stage presence, quick-fi re

Blooming cheek.. In the proud tradition of the Keystone Cops and Sykes’ Corky, it’s good to know that comedy policing is alive and well in SE9. Earlier in the year, SPY apprehended one of our PCSOs cycling around Well Hall Pleasaunce, against park by-laws, only to be told he was ‘on an emergency call’. This seemed unlikely given the lack of a blue light on his handlebars. Now SPY learns, a female colleague, stopped for the same off ence by a member of the Friends group, replied that she was entitled to do as she liked, including cycling through red lights. Only if necessary, one assumes.
After making
a series of ill-informed comments about the Friends’ activities in the Pleasaunce she headed off , with bike, towards an exit. Wheeling it, we’re pleased to report.
Blooming marvellous.. On a more upbeat note, the Pleasaunce has scooped a top prize in this year’s London in Bloom awards. The park was placed in the ‘silver-gilt’ category, the best award won by a Greenwich public space in recent years. SPY remembers back to not too long ago when the environs were a virtual ‘no-go’ zone, so handshakes all round to the council’s parks department, Tudor Barn, Friends and yes, ok, also the local PCSOs who have provided good security back-up. Sadly, some fl ower beds are to be lost to the latest austerity measures, but key compromises have been levered by the Friends.
Channel Champions SPY off ers his congratulations to swimming team Ella Morrit, Emma and Chloe Ward, Jessica Limpkin, 13 and Hayley Ashenden from the Eltham Training and Swimming Club, who completed their cross-Channel relay swim in 18 hours and 35 minutes on October 15.
