Speakers for Schools BBC

News presenter George Alagiah arrived on cue at

Eltham Hill Technology College for Girls to inspire Year 10 students in pursuing their future careers.

The presenter, a veteran reporter from war zones and famine areas across the globe, said that people in this country were among the luckiest on earth and that students should make the most of their opportunities.

Mr Alagiah was taking part in the launch of the ‘Speakers for Schools’ initiative, devised by his colleague Robert Peston, which aims for take leading fi gures into schools to talk to young people about their experiences.

He said he had been born as a minority Tamil in Sri Lanka; his family had moved to Ghana but he had been sent to

Since joining the BBC and winning

a place ‘on air’ he has reported from around the world and is now ‘anchorman’ on the Six O’Clock News.
