New kids on the block: the 2011 graduate intake at PwC in the Midlands
1,200 graduates join PwC... I
n a rare chink of light shining through the current unemployment gloom, an accountancy firm has taken on a record number of graduate trainees. The firm is PwC, which has taken on 1,200 graduates,
who were chosen from a massive 33,000 applications. In the Midlands, the firm has taken on around 100
new graduates.
‘These individuals have an opportunity to develop a long and successful career’
The students will now undergo an induction procedure, which this year will focus on ‘sustainability’. As a result, the new employees will take part in more than 30 community volunteer projects supported by PwC across the UK in their first week.
The Midlands’ graduates will be involved in a full day
of fundraising in Birmingham city centre, in aid of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s Heart Appeal. Mark Smith, regional chairman at PwC in the Midlands, said: “The economic uncertainty has altered the way that students approach finding work and demand for places on our graduate programme has been exceptional this year. “As we continue to invest in strengthening our local
teams we are delighted to be welcoming 83 graduates to the firm in the Midlands. These individuals have an opportunity to develop a long and successful career representing the next generation of professional services in the region” The graduates have joined the firm across its tax,
assurance, consulting, actuarial, legal, consulting and advisory practices. Nationally this year’s intake includes, for the first time, 40 technology jobs.
...as West Midlands witnesses jobs boom
A Coleshill-based recruitment specialist is claiming that the West Midlands graduate job market is booming – despite the recent gloomy jobless statistics. Grad Central says that it has seen a massive rise in the number of jobs
on offer to local graduates. The firm’s marketing manager Lucy Cheatham said: “There’s no
denying that there are more graduates seeking roles than there are jobs at the moment – but the West Midlands’ market is definitely growing. “Since this time last year we’ve already seen a 50 per cent increase in the number of jobs, and over 40 per cent of the roles we support our clients to fill are newly created graduate positions. “More importantly, because of the high living costs
weighted against the South East, graduates are now more inclined to stay within the region. We’ve seen our database of gradates looking for roles increase 300 per cent to just over 56,000 in the last two years. Grad Central says the biggest increase in
graduate jobs was in IT, sales, marketing communications and customer services.
