ALL THE LATEST NEWS, ADVICE AND EVENTS FOR THE SOLIHULL BUSINESS COMMUNITY

IN BRIEF

A Solihull charity’s training offshoot has launched a range of new courses. FCT Training, which is based at the Marston

Green home of parent company Family Care Trust, is branching out into business related training, including health and safety, food safety in catering, and emergency first-aid. FCT Training’s Richard Parry said: “Our

training is geared to the social care sector, but we have been increasingly running more and more general business courses, and we hopefully plan to add more in time.”

Solihull solicitor Williamson & Soden has recruited a leading West Midlands litigation specialist as a new partner. Nick Carter, who spent 11 years as a partner

at Birmingham firm Anthony Collins, has become the firm’s head of commercial litigation. He said: “I have a broad experience in

commercial litigation and I will be working closely with colleagues in the corporate team to demonstrate a new focus on resolving commercial disputes.” Prior to Anthony Collins, Mr Carter worked with City firm Lovell White Durrant, before moving on to Wragge & Co.

A Solihull mum-of-two is hoping to hear those immortal words: “You’re hired!” from potential customers after being inspired to launch her own business venture by an episode of BBC’s The Apprentice. Dawn Wainwright, of Heronfield Way, Solihull, has set up a business from home and hopes Feed My Fish will become a huge success with busy families and professional couples around the borough who need help with last minute emergencies. From one-off calls to pick up the children

from school, collecting dry cleaning or waiting in for deliveries or to let the plumber in, Dawn will be on hand and, of course , she will also walk the dog or feed the goldfish. Dawn, a former corporate insurance broker with more than 30 years experience, took the plunge with her new venture after watching budding apprentices drawing up business plans in the last episode of the recent series for the chance to work with Lord Sugar.

A group of Midland recruitment agencies has joined forces to form part of the largest network of independent recruiters in the UK to tackle the predicted growth in vacancies. Agencies which are part of TEAM include Birmingham Chamber Group members Hart Recruitment, Sue Yates Personnel and Talent Recruitment along with another 45 members across the region. Phillippa Hart, regional director of TEAM, said

that working in collaboration benefits clients as well as the individual agencies. She said: “There are indications of a strong upturn in the jobs market with more vacancies coming onto the market. Companies are gaining confidence and are ready to take on staff once more.” Sectors which are showing signs of growth

against last quarter include the engineering, manufacturing, marketing and digital areas.

Airline training cabins take off

BY PHILIP PARKIN A

Midlands business is flying high after a busy summer building mock-up airline cabins at colleges

and schools around the UK. JARE Airline Training Partnership Ltd, which is based at Station Road, Coleshill, is an aviation training company. As well as training would-be aviation staff, the

company also builds and installs mock-up cabins and check-in facilities, which are then used to train students interested in going into the aviation industry.

‘The facilities at Coleshill feature a number of aircraft mock-ups, including a cabin for decompression training’

“We have built 63 of these in the past 10 years,” said JARE founding director Andrew Easton. “We have a warehouse full of equipment from airlines which has been scrapped, so everything we build is authentic.” The company also has a complete aircraft at its Coleshill base, which is used during practical

activity days for visiting students (some 3,000 use the facility every year), but the biggest trainer the company owns is a decommissioned Boeing 737, which is based at Bournemouth Airport. The facilities at Coleshill feature a number of

aircraft mock-ups, including a cabin used for decompression training, another used for over- wing emergency evacuation, and even an escape chute. For those hoping for a career as ground crew, there are check-in desks, and a security gate, together with a fully working metal detector. Among mock-ups built and installed by JARE this summer is one for North East Worcester College at Redditch. It is a mock-up of a section of cabin, and will be used by 16-19 year old students to give them an introduction to a potential career as airline cabin crew or check-in desk staff.

Another local college, Bournville, is currently

considering having a mock-up built at its newly opened £60m campus at Longbridge, which is on the site of the old Rover car factory. JARE is now in its 21st year, having being set up in 1990 by Mr Easton. Today, he is partnered by Julie Rushton, a former chief stewardess at a number of airlines. Mr Easton’s background is also in the airline industry – prior to JARE, he ran a small airline, Classic.

Social club celebrates 30 years

Land Rover Social Club is poised to celebrate a 30th anniversary – of the day that work began on its Billsmore Green, Solihull, premises. The club borrowed money for this back in 1982, and two years later its premises were opened. Today, the building houses one of the region’s most thriving social clubs, catering for more than 5,000 current and former Land Rover workers. The club also has some 600 ‘special’ members, and a further 250 ‘sportsfield’ members, who joined to take part in the football and rugby activities.

Land Rover Social Club has an active

programme of events, ranging from dance classes to snooker and darts. Members can also enjoy karaoke events, and a host of other entertainment. Room hire is also available.
