Hello once again from the Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton. ‘End Polio Now’ Readers will recall that Rotary has for many years been at the forefront of the international project to eradicate polio throughout the world and that there were now only a few cases reported in remote areas of Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Nigeria. The project received a setback recently when a small number of cases were discovered in China. The Chinese government has undertaken a massive vaccination campaign with vaccinations taking place in homes, kindergartens, schools, bus stations and airports with millions of children and young adults being vaccinated. Children who have been given the vaccine are marked behind the ears with indelible ink to make sure there is no confusion. Genetic studies show the virus came across the border from neighbouring Pakistan. Last October we highlighted the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign when, with your support, we took part in ‘Focus on the Crocus’ and thousands of purple crocus bulbs were planted across the country, including our two townships. These provided splashes of purple in February, representing the colour of the ink used to identify those who have been vaccinated. This year we are following up the project by planting more crocuses. During October we have planted 7000 purple crocus bulbs outside Franklyn Ainsworth House, between Cattle Street and Bank Mill House in Church Street, Great Harwood. An additional 2,200 multi coloured bulbs donated by the Green Spaces Forum were incorporated in the latter area. The Management Committee of Bank Mill House purchased a further 5,000 which we have assisted them to plant outside their premises and Friends of Memorial Park also purchased and planted 5,000 in the park. In addition Members and friends have purchased a further 5,000 bulbs to be planted in their own gardens. Great Harwood Show Balloon Race Pleasure The winning balloon was launched by Joyce Ross of Great Harwood and drifted all the way to Hartlepool and she received the prize of £25. The balloon was found by John and Doreen Wallace. They returned the identification card to us and their reward was a cheque for £10 sent by our Treasurer. They replied with a charming letter saying “Thank you for the cheque, it came as quite a surprise…We are both in our eighties and you might be interested to know the great pleasure the whole incident has given us as we have never won anything in our lives before.” Sometimes it’s the little things that make it all worth while. The Rotary Club meets each Tuesday evening at

the Sparth

In 2011, The Beach Boys celebrate their 50th anniversary as a group and will release the long-awaited Smile album in the form of The Smile Sessions in November after a 44-year wait as a set of 2 CDs, a vinyl double album and a 5 CD boxset. Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks began the album in 1966 but because some of the new songs were too challenging for some members of the band to play live it was shelved until this year.

The Beach Boys were formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Managed by the Wilsons' father Murry, The Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records in 1962. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of surfing, (Although Denis was the only one who surfed,) cars, and romance.

Some of their most memorable songs include:- Sloop John B, Surfin Safari, California Girls, Good Vibrations, Help me Rhonda, God Only Knows, Darlin, Do it Again, and Little Deuce Coupe.
