Driver Awareness The Psychological
Approach to Driving. This country is in a mess in relation to road safety and the current system of
trying to educate drivers can only be described as ‘a failure’. Trying to educate people just by using traffic calming methods is naive and represent the worst possible ‘driver education’ environment. Let's also think about driving courses on offer by certain county councils and some police forces. Why are they necessary? You've already passed the Government's driving test. Why do you need something else? There are several answers to this but the most important one is that the Government realises that the standard Driving Test is TOTALLY INADEQUATE. Isn't it shameful that official driving tuition in this country offers no motorway driving instruction; proper advice on overtaking techniques and attitudes; the principles of cornering; driving at night; being in charge of a motor car with four or five persons on board – where it handles in a totally different manner than it does with just two persons aboard, - before the driving test is taken? Suddenly, after not being allowed anywhere near a motorway, you can now officially go and travel at 70 mph, among scores of drivers who are not interested that you don't know what you're doing! (You’re in a position akin to high speed formation flying with totally untrained strangers!) 'Driver Awareness' and the accompanying book "Mind How You Go" will show you all this, and more, plus helping you to gain a new ATTITUDE on all roads, especially motorways.
‘Driver Awareness’
invites you to THINK and to view others in a different light. It shows you how to take total responsibility for yourself – no matter how bad the driving situation is at any particular moment. There are many psychological aspects that you may not know. Some insurance companies now have little regard for 'Pass Plus' certificates. Why? Because they realise that it has limited value and isn't helping to reduce the number of crashes, especially those involving young people. Any driver education is useful but who are the educators? Do they actually have useful information that will help you to think differently and stay alive on the roads or is it, yet again, more of the same old story that isn't working in reducing the number of crashes? EINSTEIN HAD A REALLY GOOD DEFINITION OF INSANITY. HE SAID IT WAS DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS. Here also is just another thought that brings me to my next question:
What is an accident? The word 'accident' infers that
whatever happened was unavoidable and that nobody was to blame.
This is not the case on the roads - there is always someone
at fault. Usually someone has assumed that another road user will or will not do something and has acted on that assumption. At 'Driver Awareness' we say that the word 'assume' makes an ASS out of YOU and ME! and the word does not exist in the vocabulary of a truly aware driver. Other European countries do not have accidents, they only have crashes and that's what we believe. What do YOU think? In the book "Mind How You Go" (available on- line and at selected book shops) there are lots of sections on these aspects, all written in an interesting, non- patronising way. By reading this regular column you will discover hundreds of useful, relatively unknown, driving tips. Adrian Shurmer is a former Police Driving Instructor and VIP protection Driving Instructor and a firm believer in ‘proper’ driver education (psychological) where people WANT to improve their awareness in an entertaining way – without instruction.

Following the theme about misleading signs (October Edition) Mr Keith Hargreaves has reported that drivers are regularly travelling the wrong way along Commercial Road, Great Harwood – which is governed by legal ‘No Entry’ signs. However, clearly written on the road surface is the word “Entry” (nothing else)!!!! Let’s be careful out there. Don’t break the law (keep your wits about you) and beware of misleading signs and road markings.
