Flying Toys Flying Toys is the UK distributor for two major radio control model brands: Silverlit and

Parrot. The classic Silverlit Picoo Z is generally considered to have started the whole micro

helicopter phenomenon off in 2006, leading to much more sophisticated advanced alloy choppers like the latest Sky Wizard and Sky Dragon, that incorporate electronic gyros for superb directional stability. The brilliant new Heli Blaster features a rocket fi ring facility, launching up to six lightweight plastic missiles independently or simultaneously, before landing to reload. The sensational Spy Cam features a pair of contra rotating rotors and a gyro to hold it steady whilst recording hundreds of pictures, or several minutes of video in fl ight. Finally Silverlit’s amazing Space Avengers Centaur and Phoenix spaceships may be fl own indoors in a remarkably small space and will actually take off vertically upon command. The Parrot AR.Drone is one of those products that have captured the imagination of consumers with an avid following on the Internet. It is operated using iPhone or Android devices such as the Xoom, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S1 & Samsung Galaxy S2. Four powerful brushless motors drive the quadricopter’s high performance propellers,

combined with a package of sophisticated electronics to make it easy and fun to fl y, including an autopilot to take itself off, hover at a predetermined height, and land automatically upon command. Simply tilt the iPhone, to make the model travel forwards, backwards, left or right. Having mastered these basic techniques, slide the virtual throttle forward to climb and hold in a hover, then press land to safely descend. Diagonal movements will make the AR.Drone spin slowly in either direction. Release the screen for immediate stabilisation, whilst accidental contact with the rotors will cause them to stop. Suitable for both beginners and experts, the augmented reality drone features a robust carbon fi bre framework, with a tough expanded polypropylene foam protective body for indoor use. A streamlined hull is provided for fl ying outside, with pairs of red and green LED lights conveniently fi tted front and back to assist orientation. The AR.Drone generates its own wi-fi connection with a range of up to fi fty metres and incorporates an onboard computer. A vertical and horizontal video camera selectively feed live footage to an on screen display on the iPhone or similar, with a high speed of sixty frames a second providing stabilisation for the vertical camera. An innovative detection system will identify other AR.Drones, or tagged virtual objects, whilst validating the shots fi red against an enemy when used in conjunction with AR.FlyingAce.
