SPN OCT 2011 ShowPreview

New products and exhibitor numbers are significantly up on the Barcelona show in 2009

PISCINA, BARCELONA, SPAIN

RESIDENTIAL POOLS

Almost everywhere in Europe new pool building has shown little or no growth in 2011. The show sets out to discover the long term role of innovation and cost savings. The sustainable swimming pool of the future will come into focus offering more eco friendly, long term building options to consumers who might be encouraged to invest if they believed their new pool could be cheaper to run and last longer. The seminar programme will look at the potential of applying new materials and the rehabilitation and renovation of concrete swimming pools will be analysed and areas such as automation and safety.

WATER TREATMENT

The way the industry looks after and maintains the quality of its water is still the biggest theme for any international show. The number of exhibitors in Barcelona who are showing water treatment products is up 57% on two years ago with a record number showing low or non- chlorine alternatives.

WELLNESS

The wellness sector remains a bright spot for Europe’s pool and spa sector with genuine growth of wet leisure specialist products such as steam rooms, saunas and showers. Spas in hotels

grew by 23% last year in France and Spain and the luxury end of the home market for expensive wet leisure products grew dramatically. This sector includes the improved sales of high end hot tubs.

Some of the conferences will focus on the dynamics and pool building and renovation trends of foreign markets for residential swimming pools and wellness.

The seminar programme will also include the results of a detailed study into the swimming pool market in Spain, comparing data over the past two years. The study shows that the majority of pool builders have not experienced any great growth in 2011 over 2010 and many remain pessimistic about any improvement in the market. The faltering economy in many parts of Europe is still the biggest factor in a slowing specialist building market. The sessions and round tables on wellness will focus on topics related to how to make a spa in a hotel, sports facility or wellness centre profitable. The future and safety of water parks will also feature top level professionals.

The show will also host the third Ibero- American Congress on Sports and Recreational Facilities, a forum which will bring together companies and experts from 23 Ibero-American countries in a common platform. spn

SIX THINGS BARCELONA 2011 WILL DELIVER

Sustainability – a word which will be pinging around Europe’s pool industry from now on. Products and designs which are more eco friendly, reduce energy useage and have long term value will be a theme. So it is all about how to incorporate new materials into pool building, how to renovate concrete and how to make pools generally last longer.

1

More energy saving new launches with over 100 products already listed as focusing on cutting or controlling energy costs with more new names appearing in the heat pumps market.

2

UV will be one of the themes of the show. Throughout Europe UV systems are being seen as perhaps not an alternative to chlorine but a way of controlling the use of the chemical. New lower entry systems aimed at the residential pool owner will be on show.

3

New pool building in Spain like many other European countries is down on last year

A touch of spa glamour. The luxury wet leisure market including steam rooms, luxury showers and in-home saunas continues to grow throughout Europe and Barcelona will see some sparkling additions to the options available for 2012.

4

Little innovation in the hot tub market. The US hot tub industry still sets the pace when it comes to new products and innovations and so it isn’t until November when the US market delivers its new projects and ideas for 2012. Hot tubs will still be well to the fore at Barcelona.

5

Safety, safety and more safety. The growing number of high profile accidents in and around the pools of Europe makes safety a bigger product issue almost every year. Governments are getting even tougher with new legislation so pool owners now need the safety solutions more than ever before.
