HEATPUMPS4POOLS – ‘ADVICE TO THE CUSTOMER IS A PRIORITY’ David Morris, Managing Director of HeatPumps4Pools, says he views heat pumps now very much as a commodity product. His business, which claims the largest selection of heat pump brands on the market with a tough line that they refuse to be beaten on price, has no doubt that using swimming pool heat pumps as pool heaters is the cheapest and most energy efficient method of swimming pool heating and will substantially reduce pool running costs. “There’s plenty of competition in the market but there’s lots of growth in this sector and a lot of people continue to look at the options for heat pumps.
“Our priority is to give as much help as we can with pre-sales advice and post sales back up. That’s all we can do. After that the choice is up to the customer.”
Earlier this year HeatPumps4Pools added the Chinese made Duratech range to its impressive line of heat pump models which includes everything from Heatstar’s Solar Bear through to products from Calorex, Waterco, Nirvana and many more. “The product we recommend to customers depends almost exclusively on their needs,” added David. We have to explore with the customer what budget he has, the size of the pool, whether it is indoor or outdoor. Some customers know what they want when they come to us. Others are just looking for a quote and go elsewhere and others need us to help them at every stage of the way.”
The price range reflects the choice open to pool owners – it’s basically everything from £560 at the bottom of the range through to whatever people want to pay, £20,000 plus. David has just moved into the second hand market selling heat pumps. “It’s only just something we are trying out,” he says. He doesn’t see any radical changes in the technology of heat pumps in the future but there are interesting options now on the market like the ability to text SMS to a heat pump unit. “A great option for holiday homes,” he adds.
LIGHTHOUSE POOLS BRINGS FRENCH MADE ZODIAC INTO THE UK

Power First is Zodiac’s flagship range with five units from 6kW - 15kW. Power First offers a top of the range heat pump for pools up to 100m3. Eden Pac is aimed at the discerning pool owner who likes to use their pool for an extended season. There is a lifetime warranty with the Titanium heat exchangers. The Zodiac range is extensive and suits pools up to 200m3.
WATERCO INTRODUCES SUBZERO HEAT PUMPS
The latest advancement, ElectroHeat Subzero heat pumps which extract latent heat from the surrounding air, intensify it and transfer it to your swimming pool are the latest additions to the 2011 Waterco range of Canadian made products. ElectroHeat Subzero heat pumps will heat a pool even when the ambient air temperature is below freezing point.
The Waterco range of heat pumps are manufactured at Waterco Canada and have become known for quality, reliability and performance.
SURGE IN HEAT PUMPS IS ‘CONSUMER DRIVEN’
The surge in sales of heat pumps over recent years is consumer driven, says Steve Smith, Sales Manager of Plastica. “It is one of those rare things which isn’t led by the trade but reflects the enormous interest from consumers in finding a more economical and environmentally friendly way to heat their swimming pools,” he added. Plastica sells a whole range of heat pumps exclusively to the trade and they believe the heat pump market is here to stay. “A few years ago electric heaters were all the rage but now that’s all dead – led by this consumer concern about energy costs.” He picked out the HeatSeeker pump as being one of the top products for reliability and costs.
“It is a strong, efficient and reliable heat pump which is half the price of other lines. I know this might sound trivial but its colour is also important. Most heat pumps are the colour of air conditioning units you see on roofs but the HeatSeeker is a deep green colour which fits in with shrubs in the garden,” adds Steve.
He said sales of such products at Plastica tend to follow a three year pattern for them to get really established.
“The first year will see the pool trade
traditionally cautious of new products. Year two tends to see the trade adopt the products and then in year three it gets a real head of steam. So in 2011 HeatSeeker has been a big seller and we just haven’t been able to keep up with demand. “Yes it will be a long term market and heat pumps are here to stay. They are so efficient. There are a lot of new products coming in from overseas and we are seeing units arrive from all over the world which are less pricey. It’s an important development because consumers will always be price conscious and be concerned about capital outlay. In many cases the payback on a heat pump can be about 18 months,” added Steve.
