POOL BUILDERS AND OWNERS MISINFORMED ON ENERGY ISSUES SAYS THERMAPOOL

The swimming pool industry and the owners of Britain’s 300,000 pools are drowning in ignorance, unaware of or unable to accept the fact that pools can actually be warm enough for bathing in summer without turning on the heating, according to Thermapool’s Nigel Rose. “I’m often taken to task for my claims – which are totally backed up with scientific research – that I have developed a system which can be fitted to new pools, or during renovations, to heat them for a negligible amount, saving 86% of heat loss with efficient insulation. We have two pools currently using 3kW heaters – which is the same as a kettle,” said Nigel, who would like to see pools proliferate as a result of his invention.
About 10 years ago he set out to research a system for retaining heat in swimming pools to reduce the heating requirements.
“It took years, but it was worth it in the end – now I just have to educate the trade to realise what
they’ve been taught and have promoted for the last 40 years is incorrect, and what my research has established is the right way of doing things,” said Nigel.
With a great deal of patience and consultation with universities and the Building Research Establishment he developed the scientifically- proven Thermapool insulation system, which works on the theory that most of the heat from pool water is lost through the walls and floor of a pool, rather than from the surface, as most people believe. In conjunction with a clear pool cover (also developed by Nigel) the Thermapool insulation keeps a pool warm enough to enjoy on a summer’s day without having to use any extra heating – and the rest of the year heating costs are minimal. The cover works like a green house, utilising solar energy to heat the water. Not content with stopping there, Nigel lobbied the Government to introduce building regulation standards for swimming pool insulation, to save carbon emissions, which became law for indoor pools last year, and will be applied to outdoor pools from 2013. “Initially the Government would not listen to me either – but eventually I was able to convince them with substantiated facts.” One of the most compelling of

Nigel’s insulation system was recognised for being ‘green’ by Ofgem under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) and his customers can now apply for a grant or Carbon Trust interest free loan towards installing Thermapool. “The industry just won’t accept the scientific facts and continue to insulate pools poorly with unsuitable material like polystyrene and polyurethane foams – and their trusting customers are the ones losing out, paying a premium to keep their pools at a comfortable temperature

Holiday parks, hotels and health clubs could cut their annual energy
bills by up to a half and reduce CO2 emissions and climate change levies by up to 70% if they switch to a Calorex heat recovery system. The Calorex HRD30 typically offers 300% heat recovery to pool water and/or pool hall air compared to just 50-60% from recuperator type air handling units.
Typically, the unit is capable of removing 300 litres of water in a 24-hour cycle – and plays a vital role in maintaining temperatures and conditions for indoor pool environments.
Independent monitoring of an indoor public swimming pool before and after the installation of a Calorex HRD unit has indicated post installation savings of 49% and in doing so carbon emissions have been cut by almost 40%. Whilst these figures are impressive, it is worth noting that
these savings were achieved during a very cold winter.
This translates to less than half of the equivalent cost if run on a Desiccant AHU, 37% less than if run on a Recuperator AHU and a whopping 66% less than that run on a Full Fresh Air system.
Comparable reductions in CO2 and Climate Change Levy show savings of 42% on a Recuperator AHU; 58% against a Desiccant AHU and a staggering 70%
improvement on the figures of a Full Fresh Air system.
COMMERCIAL SENSE Financing the conversion to more energy and cost efficient heating and ventilation on their swimming pools makes sound commercial sense. The Carbon Trust offers loan packages to small to medium sized public swimming pool operators at attractive rates, below market value, with repayment terms directly
and pushing tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in the process.”
Nigel said his research results, scientific calculations, and case studies featuring “amazing savings” are recorded on his company website.
“I have put all the facts to SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) for their scrutiny and hope this filters down to all the pool companies out there who are labouring in ignorance of the true pool insulation picture. Of course if they are not being properly advised, people contracting to have pools built by these ‘experts’ are not able to make an educated decision.”
