ZODIAC HEAT PUMPS MEANS MORE SWIMMING FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

Pupils at Wembury Primary School in Wembury, Plymouth were suffering from a problem many school and community pools face – how to get the water warm enough for regular use by the children to swim in. The 12 metre by 6 metre outdoor pool was until April this year being heated by solar panels which the school had invested in. The problem was that the effectiveness of the solar heating system meant that the water was really only warm enough to be used by 2pm or 3pm on some days. It wasn’t getting used enough. The solution came from an energy efficient Zodiac 15kW heat pump supplied by Lighthouse Pools and installed by DP Pool Services, a specialist swimming pool installation, maintenance and repair company covering Plymouth, South Hampshire and South East Cornwall. DP Pool Services were convinced the ‘Air to Water’ heat pump which can generate heat even when the sun is not shining would provide a better result for the pool than the solar option.

CRUCIAL ANSWERS TO THE HUMIDITY HEADACHE WITHIN POOLS
The consequences of not controlling humidity in swimming pools is potentially catastrophic. A leisure centre pool can contain up to a million litres of water heated to around 30°C. Water evaporates from the surface at a rate of hundreds of litres every hour. Evaporated water needs to be removed or it will turn to condensation. Before heat pumps, that valuable energy would have just been expelled outside. Heat pumps provide the means of recovering that energy. Air is passed through the evaporator where it is continuously cooled. The water vapour is condensed to give up its latent heat and runs away as water.

“It is also important to appreciate that there is no industry standard when it comes to rating the output capacity of a swimming pool heat pump, so avoid being drawn down the route of a ‘12kW’ heat pump or a ‘15kW’ heat pump. One brand may be rated on a completely different set of operating conditions, i.e. air temperature, humidity and pool water temperature, to another brand,” said Paul.
“To enable fair and accurate comparison of respective performance, efficiency and noise ratings, the importer / distributor should be able to offer assurances that the publicised figures have been replicated in tests carried out in the UK and are truthful, accurate and representative. Whilst the UK has strict trading standards laws applicable to misrepresentation, that is far from the case in other countries.”
At normal pool temperatures, 2 kW/h of latent heat is recovered for every three litres of water vapour condensed. The air temperature has been lowered by the removal of sensible heat to enable the dehumidification process to proceed and both the sensible and latent energy come together in the refrigerant gas. This is now raised to a higher temperature by the compressor and used to heat the pool water as well as the pool air.
When the humidity rises above the target level, a compressor is switched on; together with the integral heat pump circuit and the heat recovery dehumidification process starts. Latent and sensible energy available in the moist air is recovered and returned to the pool water and air, via the built-in heat exchangers.
As an added bonus, the system cleverly takes care of the pool environment by incorporating automatic fresh air control. Introduction of fresh air that also passes through the heat recovery process at up to 70% of recirculated air is kept to a minimum to satisfy occupancy and dilution
