PEOPLE across the region are being urged to get behind World Rivers Day on Sunday, September 25 as millions of people across the globe acknowledge how critical rivers are to communities.

International RiverFoundation CEO Matt Reddy said this was a fantastic time for people in all areas of Australia to simply stop and take stock of how vital rivers were to the community. Lake Macquarie Council’s sustainability manager Dr Alice Howe said preserving the quality of the region’s waterways was integral to the Lake Macquarie community. “From [the] council’s perspective, initiatives

like World Rivers Day are a great way to promote the importance of keeping our waterways in good

condition,” she said. “We’re aware that the lake is central to the psyche of the local community and a lot of time, money and effort has gone into projects such as controlling excess nutrient levels in the water and minimising erosion around the foreshore.” Dr Howe said one such project was the constructed wetland at Booragul which involved the building of a clay wall to prevent discharge from six stormwater pipelines entering the lake and the planting of more than 18,000 plants to stabilise the wall. The stormwater runoff is then fi ltered through the wetland itself before being discharged into the lake.

Mr Reddy said people sometimes forgot how critical water was.

“For instance, one kilogram of Australian beef requires around 100,000 litres of water to produce and one kilogram of butter uses up around 80,000 litres of water. “In NSW, it is estimated more than 85 per cent of rivers have been degraded to some extent by human activity.”

Dr Howe said there were some simple steps people could take to do their bit for water quality in the region.

“Some simple things that people can do include not over fertilising lawns and maintaining vegetation cover in their yards,” she said. “I’d also really encourage people to get out and get involved in local community groups like Landcare.”
