CARING FOR THE LAND: Choosing native plants makes backyards habitat-friendly.
VOLUNTEERS from Lake Macquarie Landcare’s 300 groups will come together this weekend for their annual Mini Muster. To make the celebration even bigger, this year the Mini Muster will coincide with Lake Macquarie City Council’s native plant giveaway.
As well as receiving two free plants at the giveaway, residents can sign up for the council’s Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program to receive an extra two plants. To be held at the Landcare Resource Centre at Teralba, visitors will have the chance to talk to wildlife experts, learn about marine life, native fl ora, fauna and frogs, as well as receive free environmental educational resources. Lake Macquarie Landcare co-ordinator Jason Harvey
said for those brave enough, there was also the chance to get up close to live reptiles.
“The Lake Macquarie Mini Muster celebration is an annual event to get all Lake Macquarie Landcarers together, recognising the great work they have achieved on their Landcare sites,” he said.
“It is essential that we identify the important role that Landcare plays in sustainable land use, community participation and biodiversity conservation.” The Mini Muster will be held from 8am to 2pm this Saturday (September 10). Two free plants are available to Lake Macquarie ratepayers who bring a rate notice or receipt with them.
