Moves for Lake support networks

By MICHAEL BLAXLAND

RESIDENTS of Warners Bay, Eleebana and Valentine are hoping that the circle may be turning back to a greater understanding of the

benefi ts of knowing your neighbour. A community meeting will be held next

Wednesday night (September 14) to try to resurrect the idea of Neighbourhood Watch schemes. Organiser Val Henderson said, from their heyday some 20 years ago, there was only a handful of committees left in the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle areas. “We had a very active group in Eleebana about 20 years ago with many of the houses displaying the Neighbourhood Watch logo on their letterboxes, and a series of safe houses operated around the suburb,” she said. According to NSW Police, Neighbourhood

Watch was the local community and police working together to: • establish a safer environment by reducing violence, crime and fear;

• build a safer community, whether it is a rural area, city neighbourhood or marine location;

safer and

• prevent crime that affects you; • enhance effective communication; and • develop community spirit. Mrs Henderson said she and her friends

were fi nding that there seemed to be interest expressed by people aged over 50, and some by those in the 30 to 40 years age group. “The younger set doesn’t seem so interested, but there are plans by the police to set up social networking sites which would act a little like Neighbourhood Watch, but these are still a couple of years off,” she said. “We’re having next week’s meeting to see if

there’s enough interest around the community. A lot of these initiatives seem to get lost in the rush of people’s busy lives, but it’s important that young people to have somewhere to go if they need to feel safe. “It’s also a way to bring back friendly neighbourhoods where everyone knew the other people in their street and supported each other.”

The meeting for people in the Warners

Bay, Eleebana and Valentine areas will be held at Valentine Bowling Club from 7pm next Wednesday, September 14.
