short ‘n’SWEET Talkin’ about one funny bloke

CHERUB-FACED comedian and regular on the hit TV show Talkin’ ’bout Your Generation Josh Thomas will be returning to Newcastle next month for what promises to be a night of good-natured hilarity. This is a show that will have Thomas talk about everything that has ever happened. Ever. At the age of just 17, Thomas was the

youngest-ever winner of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s RAW comedy competition in 2005. He also made the fi nals of So You Think You’re Funny, Edinburgh’s equivalent to RAW. In 2010, Thomas was nominated for best show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He then sold out a national tour that included Sydney Opera House and managed to squeeze in a

Treble your pleasure that’s ENTERTAINMENT

AFTER his success on Australian Idol, Marty Worrall (pictured) has been working extensively as a session singer and songwriter while still performing in the Hunter and in Sydney. His debut single One Day remained in the top 10 of the Australian independent record label chart for six weeks and his co-written track Here She Comes was featured on a Canadian top 10 album by French-Canadian rocker Jonas. He has returned from a songwriting trip to

Nashville with a fresh batch of songs that he is keen to share. His style has been described as quirky rock with a real pop sensibility. If catchy rock tunes with soaring melodies are your thing, then come on down and check him out. The Low Flying Hippies, self-confessed

“unlikely musical allies”, are a worldly trio consisting of Malaysian-born Pana Damien Watson, Hong Kong-born Mark Szeto and Atlanta’s Chris Fields. On a journey that began in 1998, exploring diverse musical styles along the way, the Hippies have come together to craft a distinct Newcastle sound. They are a unique fusion of pub rock and international fl air, singing about spirituality and the beauty in everyday life, while still rocking out and having fun.

Also on the bill are Dirty Utility, a group

of Central Coast boys ready to take on the Australian rock scene. Combining melodic rock riff s and face melting guitar solos with the gut- busting scream of Mat Jackson, topped off with powerfully driven bass and drums, Dirty Utility’s sound is sweetly sewn together with

harmonic backing vocals and catchy chants. With the completion of a full set of original material, the Australian four-piece have already sparked interest from industry professionals, scoring a support role for Heroes for Hire. With a promise by the band to please your ears and get stuck in your head, you won’t want to miss their exciting set. Catch Marty Worral, the Low Flying

Hippies and Dirty Utility at Lizottes, Newcastle on Thursday, September 22.

short ‘n’SWEET Down and dirty with Buzzard

Pugsley Buzzard is a piano player and singer with a distinctive sound. His shows are exciting and captivating, with his huge mesmerising voice and dazzling piano playing all delivered with a vaudevillian nuance and humour. Buzzard’s music spans the entire spectrum, from dark hoodoo blues musings to good-time rollicking boogie-fuelled piano romps that never fail to get people stompin’ and shakin’ that thang. Buzzard is a fascinating and versatile songwriter who also enjoys interpreting classic R& B, jazz and popular tunes, giving them his own fresh and unique treatment. Pugsley’s playing features barrelhouse, boogie and stride piano stylings dripping with New Orleans funk and oozing with tantalising improvisation which ranges from delicate and moody to wild and ecstatic. His last two recordings Chicago Typewriter and Wooden

Kimono have both been selected as ABC Radio National’s album of the week and have received critical acclaim and continuing airplay nationally and overseas. Catch Pugsley Buzzard at the Wickham Park Hotel on Thursday, September 8.
