FEATURING more than 400 Hunter- based, national and international artists, this year’s This is Not Art (TiNA) festival is predicted to be another bumper year. TiNA is one of Australia’s leading independent arts festivals. Since its inception, it has been dedicated to the exploration of experimental and emerging arts media and concepts, providing a platform for innovative and passionate culture makers to present their ideas. This year, festival goers will get to see how the world ends on a pop tune, thanks to the Crack Theatre Festival’s End of Days Dance Party Featuring the Last Prom – and that’s just for starters. Critical Animals is back again this year rolling out the soapbox. The plan is to challenge creative practices and critically explore conundrums, such as asking participants to build a dream city from recycled materials before wearing the whole thing around town.
The country’s hottest media makers, culture jammers, hackers, tinkerers, boffi ns and enthusiasts will also descend on the festival to take part in the Electrofringe’s treasure hunt to save the world.
Another major drawcard is sure to be the National Young Writer’s Festival with the country’s largest gathering of young and innovative writers working win both new and traditional forms, including e-zines, comics, blogging, screenwriting, journalism, prose and songwriting. In 2011, the festival will be exploring what newspapers would look like if children made them. The festival will also herald the return of the crowd favourite, the Spelling Bee, hosted by Lawrence Leung. Writers, visual artists, musicians,
performers and producers will travel from across the country and from overseas to attend the festival, while networking with industry professionals to build their skills and showcase their works. TiNA will be on from Thursday, September 29 to Monday, October 3. For more information, visit
