TALENT SCOUTING: NSW representation will be up for grabs from a Lake indigenous tournament. By STEPHEN BISSET
THE cream of NSW’s indigenous netballing talent will be on display next month when the 2011 Koori netball tournament gets underway
at Charlestown.
The tournament is being hosted in its 10th year by the Charlestown Netball Association. Association president Dianne Pascoe said she was thrilled that the region had been chosen to host the state-wide event.
“This tournament presents a great opportunity for indigenous netballers to get out there and have fun,” she said. “It’s also a great opportunity to see some of the best indigenous players the state has to offer – the quality of the top teams easily rivals any of the Australian Netball League teams.” Mrs Pascoe said the tournament also represented a great opportunity for Australia’s next generation of netballing talent to have their skills recognised. “Netball NSW will be watching the tournament and will make selections for the
NSW indigenous schoolgirls’ netball side, so it’s a good opportunity for participants,” she said. NSW Department of Sport and Recreation regional manager Paul Hernage said the annual tournament had been growing steadily over the past decade with this year’s event expected to be the biggest yet. “The 2011 Koori netball tournament is expected to attract more than 300 indigenous netballers from as far afi eld as Dubbo, Sydney, the Macleay Valley and Armidale,” he said. “The event provides an excellent opportunity for Aboriginal people to get active and participate in a competitive and social event with other indigenous athletes.” The tournament will be made up of three divisions – open women, junior girls’ and mixed.
It will be held at Charlestown netball courts, Bula Street, Charlestown on October 28 and 29. Team and player registrations are essential. For more information and to register, phone Sport and Recreation in Newcastle on 4926 1633.
