Making smalMaking small business biggerl business bigger
WITH many pressures being imposed on small businesses, from uncertainly in the retail industry to industrial relations strictures, September may be a good month for business owners to take stock of their enterprises.
The NSW Department of Small Business is co-ordinating a series of events around the Hunter this month for business owners and operators to expand their networks and businesses and identify new opportinites for growth.
Around 300 events are running statewide addressing important issues for small fi rms, including marketing, e-commerce, human resources, innovation and technology and exporting.
The Council of Small Business of Australia said all sides of politics needed to agree on a simple workplace world for small business workers. Executive director Peter Strong said the workers in a small business included all the individuals involved.
“This includes what the current workplace relations system calls the employer and the employee. All these people make their income from the business,” he said. “We need a system that isn’t based on philosophy and vested interests – we need a system that is based on reality and people. “Work Choices and Fair Work Australia are systems based on outmoded beliefs about the way the workplace should operate and behave. One system was designed by big business to suit their belief in what a workplace should look like and the other system is designed and managed by the union movement to refl ect their needs. “In the end these systems, their development and implementation (and their eventual dismantling and reconstruction into another system) has failed everyone except the vested interests.”
