Walker WALKING gently for debut

SYDNEY singer and songwriter Jane Walker will be heading to Newcastle later this month in support of her acclaimed debut album Walk Gently. Off ering an uplifting cocktail of chill-out pop, Walker’s original music combines fl avours that are reminiscent of Fiona Apple, Dido, Norah Jones, Sade and Yael Naim. The album Walk Gently brings to fruition a decade of performance and songwriting

in Australia, the UK, Europe and Africa. Special guests include Chris Diff ord from the legendary UK pop band Squeeze, Norah Jones’s guitarist and New York artist Adam Levy, former Australian Idol contestant Bobby Flynn and the Cruel Sea’s James Cruickshank. Walker’s song Ancient Land, which features

contribution from Newcastle rappers Street Warriors, is described by NSW reconciliation ambassador Aden Ridgeway as “a timely celebration of Australian identity and a call to unity”. Walker will be performing with her band of leading musicians, including, on keys, Barbara Griffi n, who produced most of Walk Gently alongside Walker, and one of Australia’s fi nest percussionists Jess Ciampa. Trained in classical and jazz disciplines, including studies at the NSW Conservatorium of Music, Walker sang for two years with Sydney’s a cappella outfi t the Cafe of the Gates of Salvation. She later travelled to Africa and made her fi rst recordings with the legendary Thomas Mapfumo’s band the Blacks Unlimited in Zimbabwe. While writing and

performing in London, her song Threadneedle Street, produced by DJ-composer Pete Lazonby in the UK, was featured alongside Massive Attack and Radiohead on the album Foundations: Coming up from the Streets. This recording of Threadneedle Street is included on the album Walk Gently. Jane Walker plays at

Lizotte’s, Newcastle on Wednesday, September 28.
