Risk of stroke is much greater than you think
CAPTION: Quick action is critical when a stroke happens.
MEDICAL authorities will come together in the Hunter next week as part of National Stroke Week.
Hunter New England Health, in partnership with the Hunter’s Stroke and Disability Information (SADI) group will launch Innovations in Stroke Care on Monday, September 12 at the Royal Newcastle Centre. Presentations will be given by Professor Chris Levi of acute services, director of rehabilitation Dr Michael Pollack and co- ordinator Judy Webb-Ryall.
After the meeting, a photographic exhibition by stroke survivors called Stroke and Life In Focus will be launched.
National Stroke Foundation CEO Erin Lalor said, by following simple steps, the rate and severity of stroke could be dramatically reduced.
“Stroke doesn’t discriminate, anyone can
be affected,” she said.
“But everyone, no matter who they are, can lessen their chance of stroke, disability and death by understanding and then reducing their
own risk of stroke.”
During National Stroke Week, members of SADI will be available for advice, information, advocacy and personalised counselling. For more information, phone 4943 9786.
HAVING A STROKE? IF you think you are having a stroke, call 000 immediately. The National Stroke Foundation is urging all Australians to follow these six steps to reduce the risk and danger of stroke: 1. Know your personal risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol. 2. Be physically active and exercise regularly. 3. Avoid obesity by keeping to a healthy diet. 4. Limit alcohol consumption. 5. Avoid cigarette smoke. If you smoke, seek help to stop now. 6. Learn to recognise the warning signs of stroke and act FAST. F.A.S.T is an easy way to remember and recognise the signs of stroke: • Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? • Arms – Can they lift both arms? • Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
DO YOU THINK YOU’RE
• Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 now.
