coff ee ‘n’CAKE By STEPHEN BISSET
APK, 86 Beaumont St Hamilton bean AROUND
just DESSERTS
What: Latte. The taste: This latte was strong, yet never overpowering or bitter. A full-bodied creamy texture lasted throughout and a subtle nutty fl avour added another dimension. The bean: Agosti. Hot or not: A well-balanced brew. The look: Looked as a latte should. Hip pocket: $8.50 coff ee and cake special. The MC’s verdict… while a pizza kitchen may seem like an odd place to “do coff ee”, the coff ee and cake special was enough to pique my interest and entice me inside on my way to another Beaumont Street coff ee hut. This latte was a perfectly acceptable eff ort, but it loses some of its gloss when compared to some of its Beaumont Street counterparts. Also, be prepared for a 10 per cent surcharge if there on a weekend.
What: Strawberry tart. The taste: This delicious dessert was a great accompaniment to the latte. A generous helping of fresh strawberries perched atop a layer of creme fraiche-style fi lling, while the whole thing was held together by a thick and buttery shortcrust pastry. The look: Served with a dollop of cream, this dessert looked as good as it tasted. Hip pocket: $8.50 coff ee and cake special The MC’s verdict... This subtly fl avoured dessert was enjoyable to the last mouthful.
