Post sporting briefs with Michael Cain
BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Bring it on Great news for Newcastle, as we’ll have the best beach
volleyballers in action later in the year. The revamped national competition will hold the fi rst leg of the series at Nobbys Beach on November 5. Four-time Olympian and gold medallist Natalie Cook will be there, as well as players who have already qualifi ed for the London Olympics. Seven courts, including a main court with seating for up to 500 people, will blanket the iconic sand over nine days. Can’t wait for summer.
RUGBY LEAGUE: Back to back? Can we see Maitland Pickers win another premiership? At the start of the season I really thought that was a long shot. But they are
looking the goods. Beating Wests last weekend 24-22 in the major semi was impressive. Coach Trevor Orr had a tough job taking over after coaching the reserves, but he has done an unbelievable job. Sometimes, to make a start with a fi rst grade side after coaching lower grades, you really need to go to another club. Maybe it’s because you become too chummy with up and coming players and by the time they hit the top grade the respect isn’t there anymore. Anyway, Maitland will now await the winner of Wests and Wyong in this week’s fi nal. This is something for the coaches out there. Is winning a second premiership in a row, harder than winning your fi rst or a hat-trick (three in a row)? To me, the fi rst one’s always special and three in a row doesn’t happen all that often, but the second doesn’t seem as exciting. Though, try telling that to Maitland. Go you Pickers.
RUGBY UNION: Green machine Well done, to the Merewether Carlton fi rst grade side who are through to the grand fi nal after a devastating display of rugby in
their second half with Hamilton last weekend. The Hawks looked the goods in the fi rst 40, but were outplayed by Stacey Sykes’s men. One big thing you notice with the Greens is that they really take note of directions and have a belief about their own coach and his ideas. Hamilton, on the other hand, might be better for that run. They now play Wanderers in the fi nal this weekend, who accounted for Southern Beaches in the minor semi-fi nal, 22-14, a task which won’t be easy.
And just on Southern Beaches. Gotta say I went to a few of their matches this season out at Cahill Oval and thoroughly enjoyed the style of play they represented. It’s taken a while to get where the club is now, but to the people who have been there since day dot, and they know who they are, this season must have be the proudest of them all.
