Polk County team has personal stake in 2011 Relay for Life Case, in remission after finishing treatments in
April, took his laps in the Relay for Life via scooter for nearly six hours.
When the Polk County Courthouse or-
ganized a Relay for Life team earlier this year to raise money – and awareness – in the fight against cancer, it had a deeply personal mean- ing for June Wiles, Polk County Assessor. Making laps with the team during the main
Relay event on May 20 was June’s grandson, Case. In December, 2008 Case was diagnosed with leukemia. He is now in complete remis- sion, having finished his treatments in April. “So, my family was really celebrating with this Relay. He made laps on his scooter from 6 p.m. until almost midnight,” said June. Team members in addition to June were Ter-
ri Harrison, Jovan Simpson, Tiffany Simpson, Judy Logan, Lindsey Logan, Tara Simonton, Payton Davis, Frank Gibson and Sarah Gibson. Money was raised by selling popcorn and sell- ing chances on a porch swing made and donat- ed by Quorum Court member Frankie Davis. Te courthouse team also had a pancake break- fast at the courthouse May 19. Altogether, the team raised $2,058. Te Relay event was Friday, May 20 at the Christian Motorcycle Association facilities on Iron Mountain just south of Mena, from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. Saturday. In spite of the rain there was a good turnout. And, Paula Clark in the County Clerk’s office won a nice swing that was given away.
