Saline County Deputy Collector stays the course When Joy Ballard came into office

Montgomery County Road Department vs. damage from torrential rainfall

On April 27, a tornado touched down on the eastern edge of Montgomery County before it moved eastward into Garland County. Mont- gomery County Judge Alvin Black says that most of his damage came from the torrential rain that fell during that storm. “Our road crew was out until 3 a.m. just get- ting the roads passable so the first responders

and other emergency personnel could get in to the area. Virtually every bridge and culvert in the south half of the county was washed out,” he said. He was quick to give credit to the Montgom-

ery County Road Department for the staff’s re- sponse then and in the weeks since the water swept through.

in January, she asked her Saline County Collector’s staff if they would like to par- ticipate in a 10-week running clinic called Women Run Arkansas. “Most of them were really excited and signed up. So I ran an ad in the local pa- per asking if any other women would like to join,” said Joy. Te result: 150 women signed up. On February 28 they started meeting at a local track twice a week for 10 weeks. Te training started very slowly: On week one, they warmed up for five minutes, then jogged for 15 seconds and walked for two minutes. Each clinic (twice a week) lasted 30 minutes and each week the training got progressively harder. Of the 150 ladies from Benton that signed up for the clinic, 20 made it to the 5K graduation in Conway, where women from 40 cities ran/walked 3.1 miles. Only one person, Rhonda Nguyen from the Saline County Collector’s Office, finished the clinic and ran the race – “with an awe- some finish of 50:12!” that translates to a 16:12 pace for over three miles. “I encourage all the collectors and their staff to join Women Run Arkansas next spring. If there’s not a clinic leader in your city, start a run/walk clinic. It’s positive, motivational, physically and mentally healthy for you, and it’s fun,” said Ballard.
