Frequently, Help Murcia Mar Menor give consideration to offering financial help to “Good Causes” and this year monies raised by the Cancer Support Group of HELP Murcia Mar Menor recommended that AFACMUR would be the chosen beneficiary. Though HELP MURCIA MAR MENOR’s financial situation is operating on a very tight budget, the management committee felt it was the right thing to do.

This association was formed in 1996 by a group of parents to offer support to those affected by childhood cancer, which is the second cause of death in the developed world amongst children under 14 years. Usually so deep rooted, it makes early detection very difficult. Having lost some Council grants, Mariano said that the donation was much appreciated and would enable AFACMUR to continue with their work in supporting the families of children afflicted with the dreaded Cancer. They cater on average for 40 cases per year but for 2010 it was 58 cases and currently approaching 200. Costs incurred are for the provision of psychological support for the children and the families, support for treatment i.e. Surgery, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, volunteer training as well as providing for activities both in hospital and elsewhere. They have three professional members, a Psychologist, a Social Worker and an Educational Auxiliary. All of this is designed to improve the quality of life for the children and their families.

With the reduction in grants from the Regional Murcia Council, AFACMUR, now relies more on donations from members, the public and sponsors. Should you wish to make a donation, please visit their website: - http://www.afacmur.org for information (it is in Spanish).
