Materials Lifecycle - helping to reduce landfill
Robert Horne, the materials expert, is a UK leading provider of communication material and as such understands the increasing pressure on the sign and graphics industry to manage their waste and use closed loop strategies. The company helps businesses manage and recycle material
responsibly through Materials Lifecycle, a consultancy service designed to achieve zero waste to landfill through closed loop recycling, leverage closed loop revenue opportunities and provide control over costs. Wherever a company uses, paper, board or plastic to communicate, signal, package or display, Materials Lifecycle Management has been created to minimise waste. Robert Horne was approached by an innovative white goods
manufacturer, seeking a recycling solution for end-of-life POS materials. The client was looking for a cost neutral recycling solution for
the disposal of more than 46,000 plastic and metal components, held in a third party location in Nottingham. There were a variety of plastic components, packaged in a mixture of ways and a range of metal components, which had been stockpiled in various packaging, including bunds. Robert Horne sourced a disposal route that diverted 100 per cent of materials from landfill, which had to be achieved on a tight deadline before a new product range was launched. Robert Horne viewed the materials in situ,
in order to catalogue the material and component types, taking samples and photographs, to allow recycling re-processors to assess the best possible solutions for recovery. Four different plastics were identified;
each plastic type was reprocessed separately. Robert Horne recommended segregation at source, to avoid any cross contamination, as this would result in all mixed components being sent to landfill and additional costs for disposal. Robert Horne created a clear method
statement to outline the sorting process, to ensure cross contamination could not occur. All plastic components were unpacked, with cardboard and soft plastic bales produced to minimise storage space. A series of clearly

identified bunds for each plastic type were loaded as the components were unpacked, with each bund able to contain up to four different plastic components of the same plastic type. Metal components were also unpacked and placed in dedicated skips. Over the course of the recycling programme, 29 pallets of
single plastic types were created and six skips of various sizes were loaded with metal components. In total Robert Horne processed 1.76 tonnes of plastic and more than 28 tonnes of metal, along with all cardboard and soft plastic packaging: 100 per cent of all materials were recovered, recycled meaning an awful lot of material was diverted from landfill. Materials Lifecycle Management is a cost effective way of
assessing and minimising waste. It will give you background research, a detailed waste audit, analysis of data, a full suite of reports and ways to optimise waste. Steve Lister, Group Business Development Director, Robert
Horne, says: “At a time when waste disposal costs and regulatory requirements are rocketing, it is important that the industry minimises waste and its impact on the environment. The Materials Lifecycle helps our customers reduce their carbon footprint, save money, max- imise recycling rates, meet regulatory compli- ance and involve staff in the whole process.” Material Lifecycle from Robert Horne will
provide a detailed analysis of a company’s current waste management and give a clear strategy to achieve sustainability targets. The service includes a waste composition analysis, recycling rates, potential for increased recycling, cost benefit analysis, guidance on legal compliance, carbon foot printing as well as key performance indicators. Robert Horne is a UK leading material
solutions supplier, offering an incredibly wide choice of materials, from paper and packaging to vinyl and plastics. Combined with its unmatched materials expertise, this can add real value to a sign or graphic business. For more information on Materials
