Cold cure UV inks mean less energy and cheaper electricity bills
The effect on the environment was paramount when CitySigns needed a new flatbed printer. The Worcester-based company had been using a fairly basic flatbed for the last few years but with customer demand had increased to such a level that a bigger, faster and more capable flatbed became essential.
The company chose a Gerber CAT UV, manufactured in the US
by Gerber, which uses 40 per cent less energy than a conventional flatbed printer. Most of this saving comes from the fact that this printer’s inks are cold cure so they don’t require a heat lamp. The Gerber CAT UV features GerberCAT™ inks, vibrant four-color (CMYK) cationic UV inks that cure at approximately room temperature using Cold Fire Cure™ technology, Gerber’s unique UV curing process. The unique lamp technology of Cold Fire Cure generates minimal heat on the surface of the printed material, unlike traditional UV inkjet printers which generate as much as 175-200 degrees C (350-400 degrees F) on the material surface. This means that Cold Fire Cure dramatically expands the range of materials that can be printed, including biodegradable substrates, corrugated paper and other paper products, corrugated plastic, thin styrene materials, and many more. The Gerber CAT also produces high quality items more quickly than many other machines by cutting out the mounting and laminating processes. Joint partner at CitySigns, Darren Wilkins,
