Thumbs up to the officials of the town of Smirni. They made their presence felt by means of an interesting stand, tourist guides and videos, all translated into Greek. They are ready and well- organised and, quoting their words: “the Turks wish to work”. We have an objection, though, with regard to the Greek translation in the leaflet. The town’s name is Smirni in Greek, not Izmir.

Topics

Properly substantiated topics, with a rich content and the greatest market players sitting at the panel to present their views. The forum started with the usual welcoming on behalf of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Islands and Fisheries and a speech given by a representative of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on the development of cruising in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Then followed talks on “Cruising Finances” and “Collaboration and Promotion” while the day finished with a talk on “Destination: City and Port.” The second day involved discussions on Yachting and the Marinas, a matter we have been deeply concerned with for the last ten years. At this point we need to stress that, once again, the speakers shrewdly commented on issues such as the “fleeing” of yachts for the neighbouring countries, the lack of infrastructure and the lack of care for yachting and sea tourism on the part of the Greek government. Several foreign speakers invited the conference organizers to draw up an official letter of complaint to the government. During the forum the complete absence of the invited government representatives was aptly pinpointed.

Speakers

The forum was honoured by chief executive officers, board presidents and top executives of first-rate cruise companies such as Gianni Onorato of Costa Crociere, Pierfransesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises and Vice President of the European Cruise Council (ECC), Nick Maris of Camper & Nicholson Marinas Int., Peter Wild, Managing Director of G.P Wild Limited and ΕCC financial analyst and Oscar Siches from Argentina. The people who represented Greece at the discussion panel on cruising were Kostakis Loizos of Louis Cruises, Giorgos Anomeritis, President of Piraeus Port Authority SA, and Andreas Stylianopoulos of Navigator.
