Kids Ready, Steady, Slow…

“It’s been a difficult decision,” says snail trainer Helen Howard. “But after a lot of thought we have decided that this year, for the first time, we are ready to join the world of snail racing.” Life moves into the fast lane for these thoroughbreds on the weekend of the Cherry Festival (July 9-10) at Brogdale Farm, Faversham, home of the National Fruit Collection. Helen, a scientist and qualified teacher, explained:

“They’ve been doing limbering up exercises every night before they go to sleep and I put them through their paces before breakfast each day. “Diet is very important for all athletes, of course, and

particularly for snails. A good healthy measure of fresh fruit and vegetables is just as important for them as it is for us. Five-a-day, boosted with muscle building supplements, seems to be the secret of snail success!” Would-be jockeys are invited to congregate around

the “paddock” at Slow Summer Snail Farm in Grow Plant Centre, Brogdale, at 2.30 pm on the Saturday and Sunday.

Helen said: “At just £1 a stake you can study physique

and select your runner from our stables with prizes for all the winners.” The snail farm, which is open from late May until the

first frosts in October, is registered with Kent Children’s University as a learning destination. Admission is free but there is a small charge for taking part in educational activities. In return,
