Exploring Chatham’s military heritage
A café offers light refreshments, and there is also Fort Amherst
A fortification of international importance and Britain's largest Napoleonic fortress, Fort Amherst boasts a fascinating 300-year history, an amazing network of underground passages and numerous original buildings and gun emplacements. Originally built as part of a line of gun batteries to protect Chatham's Royal Dockyard from a land-based attack, the fortifications stretched for nearly two miles and totally enclosed the dockyard and the village of Brompton. Fort Amherst was, and still is, the most intricate part of the area known as the Great Lines and many areas of the fort have been in part carefully restored. This 20-acre Scheduled Ancient Monument consists of several gun batteries, many with cannon mounted, and atmospheric tunnels. Visitors can discover how the dockyard would have been
defended had it come under attack. The underground works, Haxo casemates, grand magazine and the important defensive guardhouse are just some of the many fascinating features.
beautiful parkland, free to visit and open every day, with easy access and free parking. A gentle stroll up to the highest point of the fort offers spectacular views of the River Medway, the towns of Chatham and Rochester and beyond. Please note that
access to the tunnels is via a guided tour, for which a small charge is made. The tours are subject to the availability of volunteer guides.
Rich history In 1820 the defences
were declared obsolete due to better artillery equipment with a greater firing range. The entire
fortifications were used as a training ground during the Victorian period. The practice sieges were so popular that thousands of people came to Chatham to watch them. During WWII the tunnels were used to co-ordinate the Civil Defence's war effort.
