THE I
How many foster children do you admit in your program each year? We plan to admit 40-60 students into our program every year. This our first year launching the pro- gram, however, in the past I’ve worked with many foster youth. More recently, we have been work- ing with children in the Yarn Program to pilot our programs.
Does Foster Skills Inc mainly focus on foster children in the Boston area or across the United State? Foster Skills does direct service in Boston, only. In the near future, we will expand to New York and Washington, DC. My staff and community partners are working on both national and international levels to combat issues facing children in foster care.
What advice would you give to anyone who is looking to follow in your footsteps? I do not recommend that people follow in my footsteps. There are many paths that idealistic peo- ple can exercise in order to make a difference. It just so happens that mine path led me to start a nonprofit – I followed my heart, but I also did a lot of strategic planning to ensure that I wasn’t tak- ing resources away from children in Foster Care already but trying to add more. Many people are idealistic and make quick decisions to help without ever doing the research. So, my first piece of advice to anyone looking to start a nonprofit is to do your homework.
And, my second piece of advice to those folks who are in the beginning stages of a nonprofit: if you can get through middle grounds, you will be successful. The uncertainty, the what ifs … sometimes you have to improvise, adapt, and overcome.
How can they contribute to the cause? 1. Donate, Donate, Donate. 2. Spread the word about our nonprofit because we need to create a national and international awareness.
3. Or, become a mentor to a child in Foster Care.
