FROM KARAOKE TO

CENTER STAGE Talk about a big fish in a small pond! At only 18 years old, Alcina Tran is showing a great

amount of potential to become one of the music industry’s next big voices. Born in New Jersey, but raised for the most part in Boston, the singer has a love for both learning and making music. Alcina is a soon-to-be graduate of Boston Latin Academy, one of the top schools in Boston, and will be attending Centre College in the fall. In February 2011, Alcina entered to be in Johnny Wright’s “On the Spot” web series, in a

quest to be part of the next supergroup. Johnny Wright is a prolific manager in the music in- dustry, having worked with Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Ciara, and more. After being selected to be in the Top 20, Alcina’s journey ended at number 15. Learning much from the experience, the competition opened both doors and networks for the singer. Those who hear her voice tend to agree that Alcina has that universal pop sound or “radio

voice,” perhaps a partial product of her inspirations: Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, and Britney Spears, the last of which she is often compared to in vocal styling. Singing and writing in the pop and R&B vein, The Jackson 5’s “ABC” was the first song Alcina learned to sing. Growing up, without resources to learn an instrument, karaoke was the closest form of musical expression Alcina had access to. This proved to be a blessing in disguise, as she honed her craft in both Vietnamese and English. Who ever said karaoke was for people who couldn’t sing?
