Pete Hammer is this year’s Ontario Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity Chairper- son and an Ontario Quarter Horse Associa- tion Board of Directors Member. With over 35 years of experience in the horse industry Pete has a wealth of experience and ideas to help make this year’s Breeders Futurity a successful one!

Growing up Pete’s father always had a couple of brood mares around, so he always had a chance to ride one. After meeting his wife Sharon they started showing at club shows and then moved up to the Quarter Horse Circuit.

Pete and Sharon currently own and stand A.Q.H.A Stallion “Designed By Secret”. Sharon is currently showing “One Heluva Secret” a son of “Designed By Secret”, she occasionally lets Pete ride and show him. Pete also has many quality weanlings and yearlings for sale at all times.

Pete hasn’t shown very much in the last few years, he used to enjoy showing in Halter and Lunge Line classes with the occasional Western Pleasure class thrown in. He is looking forward to joining the Select Western Pleasure Classes this year.

Pete is still partial to watching a good Hal- ter horse class, but he also enjoys watching a good moving horse in a Hunter Under Saddle or Western Pleasure Class. Pete and Sharon have been married for 30 _ years and have two children. Son Travis, with wife Lindsay and newborn son Bruce. Pete is very excited to become a first time Grandpa. Pete and Sharon’s daughter Jessica will be marrying fiancé Nick Lange this summer.

When Pete isn’t busy with horses he enjoys riding his motorcycle, traveling and hunting.

Director’s Spotlight: Shari Irwin

Shari Irwin may be a new addition to the Ontario Quarter Horse Board of Directors but she isn’t new to the Quarter Horse industry. Shari has been involved with horses since 1981. Shari bought her first Quarter Horse race horse that she showed on the Hunter/Jumper circuit. Her friends mentioned that she should try showing on the Quarter Horse circuit in the English classes. Shari later sold that horse and purchased a Skipper W bred mare called a Stylish Lassies as an unbro- ken 2 year old. Together they learned a lot and expanded into Western classes and even a Barrel class or two in order to compete for all- around awards. As an Amateur, Shari showed her mare for

three years earning several Ontario Hi- Point awards including Hi-Point Halter & Performance Horse, Hi-Point Hunter Hack, Amateur Equitation and several Reserve Hi-Point, plus numerous Ama- teur and Open All- Around Awards. Shari then retired the mare, who turned into an awesome broodmare pro- ducing a colt, “Styled N Deefined” and a Filly, “Hollywood Doc Star” aka “Holly”. The colt was broke and sold to a Novice Youth who won several awards with him. He has since been sold to another Novice Youth in Vermont and is continuing in his winning style. Shari showed “Holly” and earned Hi-Point Weanling filly in Ontario before being

sold to a Novice Amateur, Shari has since coached this team to many circuit awards.

Shari is currently coaching many riders and loves pattern classes, including Showmanship, Equitation, Horsemanship and also Hunter Under Saddle. Shari is also a Senior WHAO judge and has com- pleted her testing to become an AQHA Novice Judge and is awaiting her results. Shari judges in total about 18 shows per year. She also works for the Ministry of Finance as a Controllership Analyst. She has three sons; Blayne, Evan and Conner. When not busy with horses and work Shari enjoys playing Tennis and travel- ing.
