President’s Message

We know that once CanAm is over, Spring is just about upon us, and along with that comes antici- pation of a whole new riding season and reuniting with old friends.

CanAm was another great success, and I want to thank Dan and Berenice Fletcher for taking on the responsibility of the ORHA booth this year. There were several members who stepped up to help and your assistance was greatly appreciated, thank all of you.

In addition to the New Member Orientation Package unveiled at our AGM, your Board has also produced a new ORHA video, which was launched at CanAm, and is now posted on the ORHA website – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6k4cJhasVbE. The video features ORHA members past and present, in some exciting reining runs, and contains interviews with our ORHyA President, Darby Mail- hot, 2010 Brian Heaton Memorial Award winners, Larry and Lynne McDougall, and NRHA Hall of Famer, John Snobelen.

We are very proud of this video, and a special thank you goes out to Melissa Glidden and Tom Cud-

ahy for putting it together, and to Nancy Mariani for her help in keeping everything running smoothly the day of taping. I am sure new and old reiners alike will enjoy this production and will enjoy seeing old friends and past events featured in it.

And for our next project, we are putting together a Member Directory of coaches, trainers, breeders and if you are an ORHA member and would like to be included in this publication, please send me the information at president@orha.on.ca. And if you are a trainer, you might also want to look at getting on the NRHA Trainers List – it costs $25 and there is a form on their website to complete.

The OBBO Trots and Slots on March 26th was another great success, and the OBBO would like to thank everyone who participated or supported this fun event in any way.

I hope you are all enjoying Spring and I look forward to seeing you at Fletchers Horse World on May 6th.

Safe sliding. Carol

OBBO Trots & Slots Fundraiser Another Success

Submitted by the OBBO Committee

It was another sunny day for the Trots & Slots Fundraiser, which was held on Saturday, March 26th, 2011. The thermometer was much lower than we hoped for, but the continued support and attendance was high. With 104 in attendance, the ‘Top of the Turn’ dining room was warm and welcoming. There were lots of friendly faces, happy to get out after a long cold winter and kick off spring on this cool, crisp day. The food was delicious, plentiful and hopefully you got your fill.

Once again, some guests were successful with the horses and others with the slots. Many attendees were successful with the multiple prizes that were handed out. In total, 73 prizes were distributed, and hopefully you went home with something. Mane & Tail goodie bags were handed out, along with picture coaster sets, Cineplex movie passes, Bon Appetit Restaurant gift card, Xtreme riding gloves donated by Wilson’s Tack and Veterinary Supplies for partici- pants and winning drivers, pen & pad sets, $5.00 vouchers from Quick Feed Ltd in Cope Town, OBBO vest, hat, hoodie and engraved mugs for par- ticipants, winning drivers and race sponsors. Our grand prize winners for the brightest, most colourful shirt were Wayne Yendrick for the guys and Taylor Mariani for the gals. Taylor actually took the time to design her own shirt from scratch. Way to go Taylor - nice job, it paid off. Wayne received a $40 gift card

donated by TSC in Grimsby, and Taylor received a gift basket with lots of goodies which was donated by Greenhawk in Beamsville. From the feedback that we received, a good time was had by all. Lots of laughs and stories were shared, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

THANK YOU to all our repeat participants for your continued support, and for the first time atten- dees, thank you, and hopefully we will see you again next year. Also, a big THANK YOU to all who donated product, your contributions made our event even better. We cannot thank our race sponsors enough for their continued support and generosity. To all of you, a great big ‘THANK YOU’, you are greatly appreciated.

George Ledson of Cavalier Farm in Caledon recently graciously donated the use of his beautiful facility to the ORHA for the filming of our new promotional video. Melissa Glidden did a great job of putting together the video, assisted by Board member and Promotion and Publicity Chair, Tom Cudahy.

The interviewees were Ontario Reining Horse Youth Association President, Darby Mailhot, reining icons and 2010 recipients of the Brian Heaton Memorial Award, Larry and Lynne McDougall, and John Snobelen, a highly respected longtime reiner and NRHA Hall of Famer.

These folks offered great commentary on our sport and the ORHA, and were well prepared and eloquent, and even brought along some of their awards to include in the video.

Special thanks also go to Nancy Mariani, who not only put Melissa up the night before, but also bought lunch for everyone.

George Ledson actually owns a reining horse, which he loaned to John Snobe- len, so he could demonstrate the reining manoeuvres for the video. George, in his 70’s, has been involved with hunter/jumpers all his life, but as John put it, “He’s always wanted to be a cowboy.” It’s never too late George – you already have the horse, so come on out to one of our shows. We’d love to thank you in person.

OBBO Stallion Donation

To date, 15 stallions have been donated for a half price breeding fee, and 10 remain to be sold. If you are interested in breeding your mare this year, you’d better hurry if you want to get in on one of these. You don’t want to miss out on so many wonderful Stallions, not to mention the great deals on them.

Many thanks to our Stallion Owners for donating a _ price breeding and support- ing the OBBO Futurity again this year. Your support is very much appreciated. A full list of available stallions is on the OBBO Futurity page of the ORHA web- site at www.orha.on.ca.
