Fire guts house, injures fireman
By Clint Parker Te Marshall Fire Department
along with units from Jupiter and Weaverville and members of the For- est Service responded to a Sunday evening (Oct. 24) fire off Grandview Road just inside the Madison County line. Firefighters battled the blaze, but
the fire destroyed the home. A two-story home on Hidden
Pond Road was full involved when emergency personnel arrived. Te call
came in about 7 pm. Marshall Fire Chief James Barnett said that units were on the scene in about five min- utes. Along with the house, a propane
tank was also on fire. Barnett said it eventually burned itself out without exploding. While no one was at home at the
time of the fire, one firefighter did break his arm while on the call. Barnett expressed thanks to all the
departments that helped and said their assistance was greatly appreciated. Te fire is still under investigation.

BlackHawks search for character in final games
By Matt Tate Even the most optimistic of
prognosticators would have sur- veyed North Buncombe’s schedule at the beginning of this season and declared the team’s final stretch as brutal. Mountain Athletic Conference
stalwarts Erwin, Asheville and Reynolds feature some of the fast- est and most physically imposing athletes North Buncombe will see all year. Te BlackHawks got their first
taste Friday night (Oct. 22) in a punishing 44-7 loss against the Warriors. Coach Carey Metts said this
stretch that next stops in Asheville before the BlackHawks return home for the season finale against reign- ing NCHSAA Class 4-A champion Reynolds is going to be more about building character for North Bun- combe (2-7 overall, 1-3 MAC). After the frustrations of last sea-
son when the BlackHawks earned only one victory on the field and were the subject of five shutout de- feats, there have been several rays of light this season, including the play of quarterback Christian Jewkes,

Te following players were chosen as Players of the Week by the NBHS football staff in their recent game against the Erwin Warriors:
receivers Ben Shelton and Colby Fox as well as the intermittent spar- kles of a solid running game and defense. However, the BlackHawks got a
dose of medicine at the hands of Er- win, and Metts hopes the team can use these experiences to become stronger moving forward. Against the Warriors, the coach
said he hoped to establish a run- ning game to slow down Erwin. Te BlackHawks had found some success recently running the ball against MAC competitors Enka, McDowell and Roberson earlier this season. Te Warriors, though, bottled up the BlackHawks and exploited
holes in the defense. Quarterback Garrett Brown passed for three touchdowns and ran for one more, and Erwin capitalized on scores by the defense and special teams dur- ing the rout. Metts said the Warriors (8-2) are
the best football team the Black- Hawks have seen all season. “We just couldn’t match up with
them,” he said. It does not get any easier Friday
(Oct. 29) as the BlackHawks face the Cougars and their defense, led by Florida commit Jeoffrey Pagan. Metts admitted the odds of stack-
ing up with the Cougars are slim. “We’re out-matched at just about every position,” he added.
