Where we worship

By Loren Metts For over 130 years, Pleasant Hill

Baptist Church has remained com- mitted to serving the northwest- ern communities of Buncombe County.

It was on June 13, 1879

that 10 local Christians officially chartered PHBC. The church has been meeting on its Aiken Road property throughout its existence. Its current sanctuary was com- pleted in 2002 and is the church’s fourth worship building. For the past two years, PHBC

has seen first hand the benefits of being a debt-free church. “Several years ago, God placed it on the heart of our leadership that we needed to pay off our mortgage in order to share the gospel more, taking it far beyond the borders of this property,” Pastor Keith Wat- kins explained.

“Our church to-

tally supported that vision. Once we paid off the debt, together we decided to move the extra money directly into our missions budget. Our church loves being able to give more and is committed to being mission-minded.”

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church The church’s mission budget

can be seen at work both here at home and around the globe. Pleasant Hill supports local min- istries such as Hearts with Hands, Asheville Pregnancy Support, New Direction, ABCCM, the Western Carolina Rescue Mission and many others. They also have a benevolence fund that supports a large number of local needs as well. Worldwide mission work is found in places such as Peru, the Philippines, India, Israel, Bolivia, Mexico, and Pakistan. Watkins and his wife, Tina,

have served at PHBC since No- vember 2001. For three years prior, Watkins was pastor of Friendship Baptist Church. He also served in youth ministry for many years at Georgetown Baptist Church in Leicester. “I believe that God answers prayer and is more than able to give us the desires of our heart,” Watkins said. “The only thing that limits God is us.

In Ephesians 3:20, we

are told that God ‘is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.’ I believe God wants us to aim high and to trust
