DIVORCE BENEFIT If any posi-

tive spin can be placed on di- vorce, it comes from the fact that the ex-

spouse with the lowest earnings is entitled to Social Security benefits on his or her former spouse’s earn- ings record. Tis benefit does not cost the higher-earning spouse any- thing. Requirements for eligibility for the spousal benefit on an ex- spouse’s record include having been married for at least ten years and being at least 62 years old. When the ex-spouse receiving the spousal benefit remarries, the benefits of the former spouse will be lost, at least until the second marriage ends in divorce or death. At that time, it may even be possible to select the best benefits from among former spouses.

HINT: For the most part, Social

Security rules for divorced couples are the same as those for married couples. A spousal benefit at full re- tirement age is generally 50 percent of the ex-spouse’s benefit.
