CAREER OUTLOOK

Cyber Security Programs... continues

security and information security prepares profession- als in computer science and the field of cryptography; it instructs them about security in computer networks and distributed systems, as well as control and prevention of viruses and other rogue programs. A majority of the master’s graduates work in industry, for companies ranging from small start-up operations to government labs and large research and development corporations. A Ph.D. program (pend- ing approval) will prepare teachers and researchers for positions with universities, government research labora- tories, and industry. Academ- ic employment ranges from four-year colleges, where teaching is the primary focus, to positions at major research universities.

Financial support in the Department of Systems and Computer Science is avail- able in three forms: 1. University graduate as- sistantships.

2. Research assistantships. 3. Graduate school-funded support.

 Jackson State University

Jackson State University has established a reputation for producing an ever-in- creasing quantity and quality of graduates in computer science. JSU graduates are offered employment by major companies and government agencies, as well as opportu- nities to continue their studies

in graduate programs. The department’s programs pro- vide learning experiences and activities designed to help students choose and initiate careers that contribute to the social, cultural and economi- cal development of the state and the nation.

 Mississippi State University

Mississippi State Uni- versity received more than $1 million for scholarships and other support for students training to meet the nation’s critical need for informa- tion assurance professionals. The first participants in the National Science Foundation Scholarship for Service (SFS) program, in 2002, received awards fully covering tuition and fees while providing allowances for books and housing.

Undergrad scholars also received stipends totaling $8,000, and $12,000 for graduate students. Students that are awarded a scholar- ship under the SFS program have the same general requirements and benefits as offered by the Department of Defense Information Assur- ance Scholarship Program award. The IASP program is similar to the SFS program but funded by the Department of Defense. The benefits and requirements are primarily the same, except the student

The goal of the Intel- ligence Community Center for Academic Excellence is to prepare students for leader- ship positions in government service with specific em- phasis on developing those critical skills necessary to begin a career in the intel- ligence community. Under a new program called INSPIRE (Informa- tion Security and Privacy): Interdisciplinary Research and Education launched July 2010, NYU-Poly will educate engineers to think like policy makers and psychologists to protect cyberspace. The Polytechnic Institute of New York University launched the graduate program to address the shortage of scientists and engineers versed in the interplay between informa- tion security and economics, psychology, public policy and law. INSPIRE graduates will be able to apply their un- derstanding of these fields to develop technology solutions that are attuned to an increas- ing dependence on trustwor- thy information systems.
