ctober 2010 marked the seventh annual National Cy- ber Security Awareness Month sponsored by the De- partment of Homeland Security. Businesses, schools, colleges and home users participated in events held
across the country. The federal government, in partnership with educators and industry, is promoting K-12 programs for digital safety, ethics, and security, while expanding sup- port for education programs and research and development in colleges and universities, as the conditions are set to create a strong workforce.
“America’s economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on cyber security.”
—President Barack Obama
Computers are important to all parts of the economy, and the number of careers that in- volve work with computers is constantly expanding. Information assurance (IA) is one of the fastest growing areas of informa- tion technology. IA addresses concerns ranging from individual privacy and data protection in commerce, entertainment and social interaction to national security. The National Centers of
Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education and Research, founded in 1988 by the National Security Agency and co-sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security since 2004, promotes education in information assurance in 94 institu- tions of higher learning in 38 states and the District of Columbia. These centers have built partnerships to include majority institutions, community, Hispanic, and historically black colleges. The Defense Department also sponsors the Informa- tion Assurance Scholarship Program in those institutions. USBE&IT brings you
a partial list of top colleges with cyber security research and education centers in the United States, working to create a pool of information assurance professionals who can address the wide range of technology, policy, and management issues in govern- ment, industry, and academia.
